2014-05-04 07:05:00 | Ok so my sons new HP envy Laptop has developed a known issue with the start screen and app screen flashing back and forth. I disabled Windows error reporting which seemed to be the prescribed solution. Now vI can't boot at all :spam "explorer.exe - System Warning. ! Unknown Hard Error Gulp. This feels like the bad old days of D O S. I don't have a clue where to go or what to do.

2014-05-04 07:24:00 | See if it boots into safe mode, then we can try something. And it looks like disabling windows error reporting caused it. You may have to use system restore to fix it | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2014-05-04 09:41:00 | Seems like at least MS are being consistant in messing up new installs of its (non) operating system on various hardware..... System restore may be a good idea, or, take it back to appliance seller to get them to fix or replace. LL

2014-05-04 10:56:00 | Seems like at least MS are being consistant in messing up new installs of its (non) operating system on various hardware Its Not always MS causing the problem, its actually HP. Seen this happen twice, Both times it was HP Graphic Drivers - and also some models cant install Upgrades from 8 to 8.1 -- Each and every time they have been HP Envy Laptops. HP cant make stable drivers for 8.1 for some of its hardware. HP's suggested fix is to run system restore back to before it started, or run the refresh - keeping in mind a refresh will wipe out all your installed programs ----- Scroll down to the second HP responce. - Read the IMPORTANT section. h30434.www3.hp.com (h30434.www3.hp.com) = Bad Drivers / Program. Personal experience: One customer had an HP Envy, every time you tried to upgrade to 8.1 it wouldn't do it, it was tracked down to unstable/incompatible HP graphic Drivers. Even HP couldn't sort it, so ended up replacing the laptop with a different model, and some updates by MS dont always work with HP's non standard Hardware.

2014-05-04 21:24:00 | Got that right. I found out that this netbook doesnt support NVidia chipset drivers in 8.1. But that's not because of HP it's because of Nvidia. They stopped supporting the chipset on this netbook. Altho 8.1 installed on it, it was a bit unstable | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2014-05-04 21:37:00 | The two Envy's I had problems with worked fine until they went to upgrade to 8.1. Downloaded the recommended drivers from HP - all turned to custard :groan: Refreshed it back to factory - this time it got a bit further using Nvidia drivers but still crashed and all turned pear shaped. We called HP, they sent out free- a set of recovery DVD's ( still W8) again updated and :yuck: HP had no answer so in one case changed the laptop to another model, the other the person said they would stick with W8 and not upgrade. Even put in a new fresh install of W8.1 (on a spare HDD) same thing - install HP or Nvidia drivers and raspppppppppppppp :yuck: Its almost as if you said speedy -- "They stopped supporting the chipset " yet it was a new PC. Microsoft changed the hardware requirements between W8 & 8.1 and HP didn't supply the correct working drivers, so if W8 runs Ok on the PC as shipped, BUT doesn't mean 8.1 will.

2014-05-04 21:58:00 | Ok, I am back now. I have managed to boot into safe mode. What now? Where on earth do I find system restore?

2014-05-04 22:01:00 | You cant do system restore from safe mode. Unless you're going to refresh it / and wipe everything. Altho I dont think you can do that from safe mode either. You need the bootdisk to run system restore. See if you can enable error reporting in safe mode | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2014-05-04 22:11:00 | Yeah ya can :) Same as W7, XP etc. Go to the desktop, RIGHT click this PC ( was called Computer) -left click properties, On the left, advanced system Settings - System Protection Tab - System Restore: 5701 Sometimes it says its failed, but 99% of the time it hasn't. You'll soon find out ;)
