1373664 2014-04-28 06:46:00 So I have decided to keep my old Acer case and add all new bits.
It has a nice front panel of 4 USB Ports and 2 audio outlets.
Please promise not to laugh....
This is a serious question I need answered, if I re-attach it to my planned new ASUS Gryphon Z87 motherboard, are they just sockets? Do they become USB3? or do I need to physically change them? Cas if I do I need to buy a new case. :o

1373665 2014-04-28 06:52:00 Front USB 3.0 ports have a bigger internal header connection so no, they won't become USB 3.0. Otherwise they are essentially just sockets; assuming the connectors are standard you can connect them to the USB 2.0 headers on your motherboard. :) pcuser42 (130)
1373666 2014-04-28 06:59:00 Have a read of the following article, explains it good. :) Most of the pins on the boards are USB2.0

These days modern cases/ Boards that have front USB3 have the appropriate connector relating to the motherboard output. www.techpowerup.com

1373669 2014-04-28 07:52:00 Soooo
How hard would it be to swap out the sockets on the front?
Or should I just work an extra shift and buy another case?
EFFIGY (12530)
1373670 2014-04-28 08:06:00 I would work the extra shift and go for a new case with front USB3 ports. CliveM (6007)
1373671 2014-04-28 08:17:00 You could also install something like this: www.pbtech.co.nz Agent_24 (57)

1373673 2014-04-28 08:28:00 Edited: agent beat me to it :p

Swapping the ports would be the easy part, finding USb3 Ports/Cable that will fit in the same compartment, that's where the rick would be. :)

One suggestion, as long as there is a spare drive bay 3.5" panel on the Case is to install a USB 3.0 I/O panel.

One like This; Example (www.ascent.co.nz) -- And Silverstones Site for more pic's. www.silverstonetek.com

You would need to make sure its the latest model, as looking on their site one has the USB3 Header, while another has leads that actually plug into the rear USB ports, transferring them to the front.

If you got a whole new case you woul dneed to check it comes with USB 3 front ports, not all cases do.
