1358192 2013-10-29 21:19:00 Youtube uses Flash (.flv) for playing Youtube clips. To play them on your TV you would need to convert the youtube clips to .mp4

"YouTube recommends using a MPEG-4 Container (.mp4) and the H.264 codec for your video. If you aren't familiar with these terms, don't let them intimidate you. Think of your video as a book, where the "container" (.mp4) is the cover, and the "codec" (H.264) is the language."

For the record the mp3 format you are referring to is for audio only (aka sound files), or at least that is my understanding of it.

1358199 2013-10-30 16:08:00 I can tell you for certain how to get the video onto your computer and play it.

Use firefox, and the addon called videodownloadhelper , it is the best one I believe. VLC is the best player in my opinion, it is popular and well known for playing everything.

It is possible to convert video using VLC from one format to another, but I have not had much luck with that, so I can't advise you. All I can tell you is how to get the video onto your hard drive for sure. You can choose what format you store it in, out of many sizes, and flv or mp4 and maybe another. But I don't know how to save to AVI I am sorry.

I think that a good converter may be ffmpeg , it has many options, many many many options. It works on the linux command line.
