1358046 2013-10-27 21:43:00 Hows the oil ? Two things about it, the obvious - it reduces friction and therefore heat, the slightly less obvious to some - it transfers heat away from the moving parts. Diesels tend to need more frequent oil changes, particularly older ones.
You don't mention it so it's maybe one last thing to try?

Oil is changed every 5000k. Done not long ago....it leaks too so is topped up as well. :-)

It has an SD23 engine, 2.3L.

Nah...it's gone.....he's had the bonnet up again, I asked did he cure it looking at it every day and he laughed and said he was just thinking he wondered when it was going to go .....we're not able to buy another ute, and really, he doesn't do so much work that needs it now...too old, like his ute, so we'll buy a station wagon, way cheaper, no more road tax and huge rego costs and a whole lot cheaper to buy, not to mention easier to drive.

You can just fit a hot water cylinder in one - I went round and measured up a friends.

1358049 2013-10-28 02:58:00 He's checked the head? As in he has taken it off and had it checked? Alex B (15479)
1358050 2013-10-28 05:31:00 sd23 is fairly strong little motor.
was the radiator replaced? did they take the tanks off to check it? i would try another one.

the other thing can simply be injection timing. if fuel economy has can to crap then it could be injector problem or pump problem. incorrect timing and poor fuel spray can cause overheating.

1358051 2013-10-28 05:42:00 Its probably the most reliable diesel engine ever made by the japs. I am in the same camp as PressF1s most esteemed member Cic and think its a blocked radiator. prefect (6291)
1358052 2013-10-28 23:53:00 He says it's not the radiator. Don't ask me how he knows that, I'm not allowed to argue.
Anyway he read your suggestions and then took it down to idiot in Henderson who told him removing the thermostat doesn't work cause it's a "something" thermostat.

So he replaced it, went up the road and it blew one of the hoses.

He's playing again now.....

1358053 2013-10-29 06:17:00 Well the first thing to do is correctly attire yourself in accordance with the various OSH Regulations. High Vis Jacket, Steel Capped Boots, Safety Glasses, Hard Hat, Gloves, Earmuffs etc.

Then you must surround the vehicle with cones and engage at least six “Arrow Trucks” to divert traffic. ;)

Once all that is in place, remove the radiator cap and fill with water. (just tape the split hose for now) then start the vehicle.

I’m picking the problem will be a dead giveaway one way or other. ;)

You can also test your safety gear by closely watching the goings on in the radiators top tank. :crying

1358054 2013-10-29 06:35:00 He messed about all day. Fixed hose, test drove a hundred times. Temp on just over half, goes up on load but not right to redline.

It's now on Trademe.

I'll take it.
