1356917 2013-11-01 08:29:00 It sure is. It's a move that should put some pressure on Microsoft to make future versions of Windows and Office free which would be tricky for them as Office has been their cash cow for years. Also they make money on the xbox but not not enough to compensate for the potential loss in revenue.

Unlikely, Mac is still exclusive (for the most part) to Apple computers and Pages/Numbers/Keynote are still exclusive to Mac. Unless Apple allows the installation of Mac on other computers (it didn't work so well for them last time...) Microsoft will be unlikely to follow suit. The only customers who may switch to what appears to be a platform that will have free upgrades to its OS and office suite are businesses as over a large number of computers this saving each time an upgrade comes out is worth it. Although a business would be unlikely to switch to Macs unless they are 100% sure it's viable, even then retraining staff is likely to cost more than enough to offset the upgrade cost and the so called "Apple-tax" will likely scare most businesses anyway.

As a side note Microsoft's Xbox/Gaming division is still heavily negative (overall), although you could argue the current cash flow from it offsets that.

1356918 2013-11-01 09:53:00 A lot of businesses are "switching" .. Or should that be incorporating various iDevices into their day to day operations. So it's a case of switching but not as many of us would have pictured it. Most businesses would call it BYOD :) it's also a different sort of "Apple Tax"... Webdevguy (17166)

Pages/Keynote/Numbers can be run from any HTML5 browser from icloud.com Pretty sure MS have a similar service with office.
