1356290 2013-10-20 20:21:00 I'm deeply unimpressed with Sky's service.
On coming home from holiday, I found my Sky box not working. It looks terminal.
Called helpdesk on Wednesday, to be told a technician would be despatched.
Friday, still no techie. Helpdesk says I'm scheduled for Monday. Hello ?? Is this good enough ?
So what are the alternatives to the monopolistic Sky ?
Freeview will get TV 1,2,3,4, Prime, Maori and Trackside.
What we would really miss would be the Sports channels,UKTV, Living, Food, History and BBC World

Are there any creative options that would allow me to such any of these channels out of the ether ?
UFB not an option, nor is cable.. I have ADSL whiuch gives me approx 10mb/s
cheers
Lloyd

Thanks for all the helpful responses.
Eventually, after some sleuthing, I was able to get the attention of SKY senior management, and the box was replaced.
It helps to know how to complain.
I remain deeply unimpressed with SKY, which behaves as one might expect a monopoly to do.
Their helplines are (mostly) courteous, but ineffective (your request is being actioned....)
The alternatives suggested are all essentially SKY clones, which doesn't really help.
Netflix and Hulu+ - now that looks a bit more interesting, as a supplement to Freeview.
Question is - are these services able to deliver to NZ ?
With increased bandwidth becoming more available, this looks like something to wake SKY up out of their (expensive) complacency
cheers

1356291 2013-10-20 23:59:00 Netflix and Hulu+ : not without some tech know-how (proxies, etc) - unless I'm out-of-date on this.

There's always QuickFlix: http://www.quickflix.co.nz/
