1358036 2013-10-27 05:53:00 Ute got up to hot yesterday with a load on back.

Changed water (it hadn't used much, about 1/2 cup), added new antifreeze, removed thermostat, changed air filter, still gets hot, although not right up to red, about 3/4's.
Without much on the back.

Approx mileage = 500,000+

Blows black smoke when you first start it when it's cold.
Spits diesel out the exhaust.
Everything replaced except motor, compression is a bit low, it was checked about 4 years ago.....more miles since then.

Fuel mileage has also decreased lately.

Dead? Time to throw it away?

1358038 2013-10-27 06:23:00 The radiator could be blocked try flushing it see if that makes a difference. rebels181 (14841)

1358041 2013-10-27 18:00:00 Depends on what make it is as each make has it's problems

Most that tow with Diesels usually replace the radiator with a custom made or bigger one, even with nearly new ones they replace the radiator to avoid cracking the head or blowing the head gasket

With 500,000 k's on it would say it would be getting a bit tired unless it has been recon'd lately

1358042 2013-10-27 18:41:00 I favour getting radiator looked at. Cicero (40)

500,000 is a conservative estimate. Unknown what the real mileage is, cause it was wound.
It's a 1986.

Radiator is fine, water pump been changed. Head is fine too, he checked that, he spent all day yesterday messing with it in hope....In fact everything has been changed except the motor....

Gearbox, alternator, water pump, shocks, steering box, clutch...you name it, it was done.

Mileage used to be around 13k per litre, down to 10 now.
I think it's time to give up on it.....too expensive for a motor.....

1358044 2013-10-27 19:00:00 Also by removing the thermostat completely could be detrimental to fuel consumption as it will take longer to get to operating temp Lawrence (2987)

That was a temporary measure to show it wasn't cause of prob.
