1356911 2013-10-30 09:33:00 It sure is. It's a move that should put some pressure on Microsoft to make future versions of Windows and Office free which would be tricky for them as Office has been their cash cow for years. Also they make money on the xbox but not not enough to compensate for the potential loss in revenue. Webdevguy (17166)
1356912 2013-10-30 19:17:00 Nah they won't make it free.. Subscription based though I'd believe. Chilling_Silence (9)
1356913 2013-10-30 19:31:00 Yup, that would work. Especially for enterprises although things like Google docs and other online offerings start to look quite appealing to the Facebook generation... :) Webdevguy (17166)
1356914 2013-10-31 10:57:00 Doesn't really matter too much there coz that's not where the money is.

When was the last time you paid for a subscription to use software?

I'm currently paying a small monthly subscription to use Adobe Creative Suite aka CS6 which is available online only in a "download it as and when you need it form". I also pay a subscription fee to use Sublime Text 2 and a wicked little add on package that runs on it called Emmet.
Both Sublime and Emmet do have freebie versions which is what I started out using but then they start pestering you to buy them will regular little pop ups. Since I like using both and figure I was going to be doing it professionally I figured I may as well pay the subscription fee and enjoy the software. :)

Other forms of subscription based software would be the online accounting package from Xero that has over 200,000 paying subscribers.
