1356280 2013-10-17 23:16:00 I'm deeply unimpressed with Sky's service.
On coming home from holiday, I found my Sky box not working. It looks terminal.
Called helpdesk on Wednesday, to be told a technician would be despatched.
Friday, still no techie. Helpdesk says I'm scheduled for Monday. Hello ?? Is this good enough ?
So what are the alternatives to the monopolistic Sky ?
Freeview will get TV 1,2,3,4, Prime, Maori and Trackside.
What we would really miss would be the Sports channels,UKTV, Living, Food, History and BBC World

Are there any creative options that would allow me to such any of these channels out of the ether ?
UFB not an option, nor is cable.. I have ADSL whiuch gives me approx 10mb/s
cheers

1356281 2013-10-17 23:22:00 You get a few Sky channels with Igloo. Cant remember which ones tho Speedy Gonzales (78)
1356282 2013-10-17 23:50:00 Thanks Speedy.
Igloo is a joint venture between the hated Sky and TVNZ. Limited Sky channels plus all free to air.
If my contempt for Sky is as bad as I suspect it's going to be, this option is not for me.
cheers

1356283 2013-10-18 00:20:00 If you're in Wellington, maybe Vodafone? the_bogan (9949)
1356284 2013-10-18 01:39:00 Put the $60 a month (or however much it is) into an account and use it to go to games and buy series on DVD ?

I've not had sky since some time in the 90's and I haven't missed it, not a sports fan though. It's overpriced and too inflexible, someone give us a decent streaming service already!

The Vodafone thing looks promising except it's still sky and requires fibre.

1356288 2013-10-18 21:59:00 Even on Optus D1 you can get a few Aussie Channels (7 network) www.freeviewshop.co.nz

But not very many choices with the rest unless you are multi lingual

1356289 2013-10-19 09:47:00 The only thing you really miss out on by not having sky is sports (I see they don't have the English premier league anymore). 10mb/s is more than enough to stream HD content, the real issue is your data cap. Personally I'd try to go with a unlimited data plan (like the orcon one) and then get Netflix or Hulu+ for $7.99(USD) a month and watch whatever I feel like. Although you aren't supposed to be able to access these services in NZ, cable networks and publishers who sell exclusive rights to show content in different countries around the can **** off. Aren't we in an age where it is possible to release content around the world simultaneously? The video game industry does it even when consoles are still heavily reliant on physical disks. HBO and co need to get their heads out of the 1990s. icow (15313)
