290365 2004-11-11 05:24:00 Hi people

My Samsung CD-R/W SW 240B has thrown it's toys just when I had some serious work lined up for it (it's out of warranty BTW). It was making a juddery squeak noise from time to time that lately has got a bit more persistent. Today it spins a bit but not convincingly with clicking noises that sound to me like the apparatus that spins the disc is not engaging with the disc properly or it's own mechanism.

Any thoughts would be appreciated on what it might be and how it could be fixed. Despite that I've decided to get a new drive, if I can fix it, it will find a home in a different machine.

I've been checking out DVD R's on Pricespy and wouldn't mind a bit of help with choosing a reliable DVD burner that retains CD capabilities. I'm not totally off Samsung, yet, but there does seem to be plenty of other options in the $120 to $170 price range. Just a matter of sorting out the s*** from the clay. Main uses will be the usual backup of business data, software storage and general backup, burning distro's and such like.

Thanks Murray P

You would also want to ignore computer stores,Retail chains offer the best advice, backup and products.

290367 2004-11-11 05:39:00 All DVD burners will read normal cd/dvds and also write dvds/cd's.

Asus/Pioneer, and LG are pretty good burners.

Just over 170 (about 180-185.62 to be exact), you can buy a 16x LG dual format

Specs below

The GSA-4160B features the first 16x DVD Burning with DVD+R or 8x DVD-R discs, 10x DVD-/+RW, 5x DVD-RAM, as well as 2.4X Dual-Layer Burning. With Dual-Layer Burning, you will write up to 8.5GB on the new double layer DVD+R9 media. Together with buffer-underrun protection and recording speed optimization for each media type, this adds up to one Super versatile drive suitable for any application. Burn Fast, Burn Right with the LG GSA-4160B.

DVD speed: 16x DVD+R, 8X DVD-R, 10x DVD-/+RW, 5x DVD-RAM, 16x DVD-ROM, and also dual layer 2.4x DVD+R(DL)

290368 2004-11-11 05:44:00 Ah! I just bought myself a DVD writer the other week. The dual layer burners seem to be where technology is heading, so you might want to get one of those to future proof it a tad. They do cost slightly more than your price range though. I got the NEC ND-3500a (www.nec.co.uk) burner which have been getting great reviews. There is a recent thread on DVD burners too which you might want to hunt down. Jen C (20)
290369 2004-11-11 05:48:00 If you wait about a week then the new drives that burn Dual layer at 4x rather then 2.4x will make an impact on the market, even if these drives aren't of interest it should have the effect of knocking prices down again for the lower spec drives.

Pioneer drives on the market at the moment are tipped to be pretty good.

290371 2004-11-11 10:42:00 The NEC looks a goer, best compatiblity for playback on a number of drives, not the quickest but pretty good and firmware improvements coming all the time.

Thanks again.

LiteOn SOHW-1633S Dual Layer Dual Format (16x+R 4x+RW 8x-R 4x-RW) Internal IDE DVD-Writer Software Included - 12 Months - $172

Would be what I'd get. $172 you can't go wrong! Sony rebadge these so they must be good. ;)
