290374 2004-11-11 02:08:00 Depends on what your criteria is as far as "are they any good'?

Do they work?....yes.
Are they cheap?...yes
Is your money better off spent on something better?.................yes.

SY mentioned a couple weeks ago that Bond and Bond had an AMD system for around the same price, That is apperently finished but i would be getting hold of them and asking questions about any upcoming promotions,By law if they have any planned they have to tell you when asked.

I would disagree on the third point if you're considering the purchase because of being on a budget. You get a very good laptop for under $1300. As you say it's for general use, there's nothing wrong with it. Far too many people rubbish computers that are not top of the line and try to "upsize" the buyer at ever oppertunity. The fact is that this laptop will run everything that most people would want to run... with the exception of graphically intensive games and some high-end business use.

This is assuming the sales staff at Leemings get told about upcoming promos, usually they don't.

290377 2004-11-11 03:07:00 I work in a retail store part-time and we are bound by our contracts that we must keep any details of upcoming sales/promotions secret (or else we get sacked). somebody (208)
290378 2004-11-11 03:08:00 Doesnt that laptop use the Transmetta CPU? And doesnt have native support for X86?

I'd love to see how one of those puppies perform with an appropriate Linux distro, meant to be very cool running and have long battery life.

290379 2004-11-11 03:10:00 It maybe related to specific items, but as i said its laid down in the law,One of the things i took note of during my dtat gathering.....

A contract doesn't and can't override the law and could easily be contested.

290380 2004-11-11 03:21:00 The unit only has passive cooling so would be silent and long lasting, Word around the grapevine is that more then a few customers have been disatisfied.

That may or maynot be a reflection on the unit but rather the people that buy them.

Hard to tell.

Of course I do. But rmcb asked for an opinion and I gave him/her mine just as you gave him/her yours. Because it is at odds with your opinion you get annoyed. With 22 years experience in the computer industry I feel that my opinion is relevant.

Metla, this is not the first time you've attempted to launch an attack on me - please try not to do it in future. Many thanks in advance.

290382 2004-11-11 03:38:00 Im with Potus on this one.

Apparently they work fine in Linux, as one of the people at the Linux Installfest had one... Doesnt support swsusp2 thou, nor does it Hibernate in Doze.

Ive sen a few kernel extras when compiling my 2.6 kernels for the Transmata CPU.

I'd say Go for it :-) ECS are very middle-of-the-range but Im sure you'll be happy with your investment. Extra RAM may be the only thing to ask about, as 128MB isnt much now-a-days.

Chill.
