2004-11-11 01:16:00 | hi all been planning to build new pc and have finally decided to go AMD and was looking at the Sempron 3100. After reading PCW this month, I am not too sure now. Am I better to go with the XP 3000+ which costs $60.00 more or the Athlon64 3000+ which costs only 40.00 more than the sempron and 20.00 less than XP!!!!! Sempron 3100+......208.00 AthlonXP 3000+......263.00 Athlon64 3000+......243.00....all ex gst thoughts and opinions all welcome oh, wanting the new pc primarily to play FarCry with a reasonable frame rate......

2004-11-11 01:25:00 | Depends on what other components your using,Other then that i believe the sempron 3100 is the exact same chip as the 64-bit 2800,but with the 64-bit extensions disabled.Looking at those prices i would probally suggest the Athlon64 3000+ I built a system last week,Sempron 3100,nforce3,512mb ram,9800pro.....I was very impressed with the cpu fan,The quitest i have come across supplied on an AMD in years, Using the supplied drivers the system ran the Doom3 time demo at 45fps,im sure a pretty hefty increase would be possible with updated ATI drivers. Other then that the system didnt break a sweat doing anything i threw at it,CPU didn't appear to be causing any bottlenecks even in the most demanding games,I could swaer it didnt ramp up past idle...lmao.

2004-11-11 01:56:00 | Hey, I just built 2 systems using the MSI K8N Neo mainboard and AMD 64 3200+ CPU's. Must say I am also very impressed by the new AMD CPU coolers, very quiet and CPU's didn't get above about 40º C even after running stress tests with CPU usage at 100% overnight! I too would recommend the AMD 64 3000+.

2004-11-11 02:03:00 | The MSI Neo Platnium based on the nForce3 or the DFI LANParty UT nF3 250Gb, both offer great performance, good features and overclock like crazy. The Sempron offers great value for money and should easily clock up to 2.4-2.6GHz, if overclocking isnt your thing then buy the fastest CPU you can afford/justify. | Pete O'Neil (250) | |
2004-11-11 02:16:00 | are u saying pete that the 64bit is not as clockable or worth the extra 40$???? not into o/cing.....yet, but would like to give it a go in the near future. was thinking of going with skt 754, rather than 939, so would i not gain any benefit with the 64??

2004-11-11 02:24:00 | The 64bit CPU's are just as overclockable, but more expensive. Seeing as currently there no 64bit software or OS on the market, i personally couldnt justify the extra cost. If you want 64bit support then grab the 2800+ its exactly the same as the sempron but with 64bit support. The sempron 3100+ and Athlon64 2800+ are only reckonmended if you plan to overclock If you wish to overclock then get the DFI board, its got heaps of overclocking friendly options, with the right ram its possible to hit DDR600+, or a 50% increase in FSB.

2004-11-11 02:28:00 | I have a Sempron 2400+ on a Gigabyte 7NF-RZC motherboard. The motherboard is not designed with overclocking in mind, but I still managed to increase the CPU by 10 without the cpu increasing at all. For a cheap chip the Sempron is very good.

2004-11-11 03:05:00 | POTUS we're talking about completely different chips, your Sempron is based on the older AthlonXP and uses sktA, the chip that dibbly is interested in is based on the new Athlon64's and used skt754. The socket 754 Sempron far outperforms the sktA chips, due to the on die memory controller and arcitecture tweaks. Out of curiousity how did you "increase the CPU by 10 without the cpu increasing at all"?
