290038 2004-11-12 04:00:00 Ahh yes Chill, I know (almost) all about dead boot loaders along with NTLDR is Missing and the variations of Windows fits, nixed MBR, nixed boot sector, etc. Not pretty when repair, install over the top, rewriting your boot sector, then zapping it doesn't do it. Silly me trying to load loaders with multiple OS's on different partitions before getting rid of the first one entirely.

Mepis did the rescue job (Knoppix wouldn't boot all the way), Yoper provided re-partitioned drives and new loader, windows got a parallel install and new start, but is still a bit cranky as it's like to be, even though I've told it "one more time pal and you're down the road" I may as well be talking to a brick.

Don't be concerned though by that little episode Prescott, just me getting well ahead of myself and ignoring the fact that Linux can and will talk to just about anything whereas, windows can barely talk to itself coherently.

Thought you'd like to know, I haven't forgotten your distro's . My new burner arrives tomorrow so, I'll be able to burn you some CD's including Jen's offering when the pack horse gets in from the big smoke :)

Prescott (11)
290041 2004-11-15 08:06:00 How many CD's, you'll find out when you get them. Might have to go on a burning spree to test the new gear ;) The Auckland pony express is yet to come in anyway, probably arrive about the same time.

The pony express should arrive tomorrow hopefully (give or take a week with NZ Post) with the CD's and DVD :)

290043 2004-11-15 09:44:00 Hi Prescott,

You asked about dual booting, where do i start, im sure you guys are doing it now? am i right?. what do i need to do/get in order to dual boot yoper and xp?

Someone has probably answered this for you already, but just in case they haven't I would suggest that you don't use the grub or lilo boot managers. Both of these come with the linux distro of your choice. If it is possible I would create a boot disk to start your linux of choice.

The main reason I'd suggest that is due to the number of people that install linux and then find that "Windows does it this way" and attempting to remove grub or lilo from the MBR without losing the Windows boot can be more trouble than it is worth.

Just a thought :)

290044 2004-11-15 19:04:00 I would rather boot from a Doze Boot Floppy (personally) and just
fdisk /mbr

If you're getting rid of it for whatever reason then you're going to have to use a partitioning app to get back the space, so may as well.

I found booting from a Floppy to get into Linux a hassle and a turn off because it made it take so much longer....

...That and I was screwed the moment I misplaced the floppy :p

290045 2004-11-15 21:52:00 i really have no idea on what im going to do:p im gonna save my important windows stuff on some cdrs and let yoper decide on what it wants to do with dual booting, unless someone else recommends another way, its gotta be easy for my brothers to get into windows.
thanks for all the help:D

290046 2004-11-15 23:50:00 How easy is this:

When it boots, you have 6 seconds to press the Down key, then Enter and it'll select Windows from the List...... Done! ;-)
