290018 2004-11-11 10:51:00 Rightoh, I'm onto the new DVD thing (ta Jen and others), hopefully I can slot it in for the weekend. CD it is.

I'll post my copy of Yoper, so Yoper might get a head start on Fedora eh Jen ;)

290019 2004-11-11 11:28:00 Id advise Yoper anyways - Just be nice to it... It is bleading-edge stuff here.

Still, its reliable... There's becoming quite a nice repositry of software too.

If you cant find an app you want - You can install Portage which is Gentoo's Package Management System and use Portage to get your app!! :D

290021 2004-11-11 18:37:00 Nope, so I'll write one now:

Fire up Kynaptic/Synaptic
Scroll down til you find Portage (It may be under "emerge")
Tick it and apply changes :-)

From there, goto the Gentoo.org website and grab the Gentoo Installation Handbook.

You'll wanna look up the part about USE Flags, make.conf, CFLAGS, and thats it :-)

Once you've edited /etc/make.conf to suit your current PC, then:
emerge appname -pv
This will give you a verbose output of what would be installed (including dependancies) to get the application you want. Lets use the latest Gaim for an example:

emerge gaim -pv

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild N ] net-im/gaim-1.0.2 -cjk +crypt -debug -debug -debug -gnutls -nas -nls +perl -silc +spell 4,696 kB

Total size of downloads: 4,696 kB

So from here we could type:
USE="-crypt" emerge gaim -pv

This would tell Gaim not to compile with Cryptographic options.
Or to simply get started, just:
emerge gaim

It'll fetch, extract, configure, compile, install and clean up all dependancies for you!

Cheers

290022 2004-11-11 19:38:00 Hmm, ok, I'll have another look in Synaptic for Emerge this time. Did a search for Portage and came up blank.

When I started my venture into Linux I dual booted Fedora Core 1 with Win XP, which was fine . Then Core 2 came out and trouble struck . . . there was a problem with Core 2 dual booting and to cut a long story short (you can read about it here ( . pcworld . co . nz/thread . jsp?forum=1&thread=47764&message=275499&q=#275499" target="_blank">pressf1 . pcworld . co . nz)) I ended up having to reformat Windows in order to get back into it . I lost quite a few files as I was silly enough not to have done a backup before upgrading . :8}

Anyway, what I now use and highly recommend is a hard drive caddy with a dedicated hard drive just for Linux . It does not have to be a large drive so you could use a second hand one or a small one you have spare .

I have three hard drives - one fixed drive with my data on it, one for Win XP and various junk and the third currently has just Fedora on it . When I get around to it I will dual boot this drive with other Linux versions to play with . That way if I stuff something up majorly in Linux then my Windows drive won't go down with it (and vice versa) .

There are quite a few people here who use this method and it is an option worth considering .
