289997 2004-11-10 09:45:00 Good point Jen. I did qualify my remarks re size/packages though and, I thought Fedora was a test bed of sorts for Red Hat Enterprise? However, I concede that it will probably be better to start off with, especially as dialup is the the connection in this case.

I'll pop Yoper off anyway, it is well worth a look IMO, which doesn't come to a hell of a lot with regard to Linux :D

I can do you a FC3 DVD iso at this stage. I haven't started downloading the CD iso's yet, but plan to over the next few days.

290004 2004-11-11 04:47:00 ok while i wait for murray p to send the cds, do i need to create a partion using partion magic or some other free utility? if so will 5 gb be big enough or does yoper do it when you install it?
also ive been reading that there are a few issues with ati gfx cards, i got a gecube radeon 9600se, will i encounter a few issues with this?
ill be looking forward to get into linux :D

290005 2004-11-11 04:52:00 forgot to add this: the linux distros are in .iso arent they, and ill need alchol 120% ? Prescott (11)
290006 2004-11-11 05:21:00 What file system are you using on the drive for XP? Do you already have Partition Magic?

As with all partitioning, make sure you have backed up your Windows first .

NTFS is a wee bit more tricky to resize than FAT32 with some installers . I know Yoper can resize NTFS using QTParted during the disk setup during installation, but Im not sure about Fedora and NTFS . If you want to install Fedora instead and don't have Partition Magic, I would just use Yoper to partition the drive and make free space (don't format it) and after it has done that, abort the rest of the installation process . You can then install Fedora and let it use the unallocated free space previously created . 5 gigs will be fine for starters (don't use any less) .

>forgot to add this: the linux distros are in . iso arent they, and ill need alchol 120% ?

No you won't need to do that, because the distro's ISO's will of already been written as an image to the CD's which are then bootable . If you download ISO's yourself, you will need to write them as images with Nero or whatever other CD writing software you have .

>also ive been reading that there are a few issues with ati gfx cards, i got a gecube radeon 9600se, will i encounter a few issues with this?

I have nVidia cards, so haven't paid much attention to ATI cards under Linux . The basic default video drivers that ship with Linux should be fine for you at the moment, unless you are wanting to game or 3D stuff . Once you have yourself settled in, perhaps then take a look at installing an official ATI driver .

>ill be looking forward to get into linux

It is great - nothing like a new challenge to get yourself going :D
Just be prepared for the culture shock, as Linux is not Windows :p
