When a big-name firm (rhymes with - - screaming) was graced(?) by my presence in their interminable complaints queue, the "Qualified Person" assured the complainant in front of me that his toaster was Very Good Product, it was faulty bread causing the trouble. My attempt to get satisfaction with a dead two week old stand-alone DVD player/recorder purchased by a friend met with similarly helpful service. A refund with barely concealed ill humour was the only recourse that worked.
Do you suggest I should believe a wall full of diplomas signifies anything other than a wall covered with diplomas?
On the other hand, I have found small firms to be helpful in the extreme, even if there are no free Ginsu knives.
Maybe it's because you can talk to the person who provides the service part of the equation and make your assessment before the purchase, so the odds of long term satisfaction are better.
But, best of all, no matter what size firm you deal with, you have a free choice, so grab what suits YOU best.
Cheers

290444 2004-11-11 04:57:00 Look, see? already an argument.

Anyway, I was looking at that top Dell machine. 3.4ghz pentium, with a Geforce 6800 GTO that is apparently in between a 6800, and 6800 GT. But it can be easily overclocked to the 6800 Ultra, and apparantly, still be under warranty. I will not be doing any overclocking though.

is Ascent, or PBTech any good?

I've used both for componants without any trouble. But I haven't bought a full system from either.

Ascent and PBTech are 2 of the most highly regarded companies in NZ.

At the end of the day though match up the specs and compare the price, but it would be worthwhile comparing such things as the actual clockspeed of the video card, and the exact motherboards.

Yeah, they rank right up there with Harvey Normans $2000+ machine with a fx5100 video card,...i would hate to think what that was.

It all just equates to more ripped off customers.

290449 2004-11-11 05:13:00 Jo, is there any reason why you don't want to have a go at building your beasty yourself? It's not that hard and you have this forum to help out with choosing the parts and provide guidance .

If I can do it, so can you . :-)

Heheh. I have also seen some of those "high performance" machines. I saw one below $1000 that was bragging about "high performance"

I have a budget of about $4500. I think the quality is more important, and I can buy slightly slower/older parts. Anyway, another half a year before I have to think what exactly I will buy. So im hoping that 6800 GT will have dropped a bit, heh, a lot.
