290349 2004-11-11 03:49:00 Alot of gigabyte boards have the overclocking options hidden, there a couple of keys you can press to unlock the advanced options. Cant remember the keys, and im not sure if it will work with your board as its Gigabytes new super cheap range and they may have neglected the feature completely to save cost. If your keen to overclock a lil more have a look around for a third party BIOS they often unlock hidden features not implmented by the manufactuer. Pete O'Neil (250)
290350 2004-11-11 03:54:00 I wasn't aware that there were 3rd party BIOSs' available. 10% was just to see if the software that came with it actually worked. I got higr but the temp went higher too - simply curiosity. POTUS (5276)
290351 2005-04-02 07:57:00 Hi,
I would like to go back to sort of the original question if I may.
I am looking to put together a new system. I do really like the AMD CPU's but this time when researching, I found the Sempron and the 64 delima.
Which is the better CPU? I know it depends on what I want to do. Basically I want a solid every day system. The Sempron comes out on top as the Best one for that, I am also going to be doing a lot of digital and grafic sort of things, using cameras and recordings.
When I am on my computer I do a lot of multi tasking, I have been known to run 3 - 4 programs at a time.
That is my question. Is the Sempron going to stand up to this type of use, or is it better to get the 64 for the grafic ability, and hope it is a solid as the Sempron?
I am confused. Is the 64 the same as the Anthon 64?
I know these are sort of basic questions. But I have been looking to hard at these CPU's and have lost all objectivity.
Thanks for any help.

The AMD 64 is the better out of that and the Sempron. The Sempron is the new version of the old Durons.
The XP is now obsolete.
Get the 64. Of course it does depend on your board.......Its a socket A I think? The AMD 64s come in socket 754 or socket 939 so I guess it also depends on if you are upgrading more than just the CPU.
Semprons are also available for socket A.

290353 2005-04-02 08:41:00 Firstly I think you have to ask yourself what your budget is because that is basically what it boils down to in the end .

There is only one Sempron CPU that I can see (on Ascent's pages anyway) that uses the Socket 754, all the others use Socket 462 so maybe you should be researching which socket features and motherboard that you require . I haven't looked at the 462 sockets myself but they would be inferior to the 754 sockets, especially on motherboards with nForce3-250Gb chipsets .

If you are going to use your computer for graphics and digital recordings I would be looking at the Athlon 64 processors myself, with the Socket 754 and nForce3-250Gb chipset which is cheaper than going with Socket 939 .

You might be interested in this article ( . legionhardware . com/html/doc . php?id=390" target="_blank">www . legionhardware . com) . Even though it is comparing the processors from a gaming point of view you could probably apply that to graphics and digital processing as well, since they are just as CPU intensive .

290354 2005-04-02 18:52:00 I have been looking at the Sempron 3100. It seems like a good stable, thrifty, brave, friendly, clean and reverent, solid CPU, sort of like the mini-van of CPU's. But I was thinking, I want something a little sporty. So I started looking at the 64's because of the graphic, digital, and gaming aspect of it. So this is my delima. Should I go for the Mini-van or the Lexus SUV?
Realistically I should use the Sempron with a 754 socket. But the 64 with a 754 socket is also on my list of favorites.
I can see the socket is important and I am receashing that as we speak. It also looks like the Manufacturer is also the problem.
I just found an article that said Windows does not support 64. I was surprised to see that. They recomended Linxis (?sp) So I am even more confused.
But I am not an expert. I am just an everyday computer user. With a modest budget, and looking for the best bang for the buck I can get. I do appreciate all of the help I have recieved already. Thank you.

290356 2005-04-02 23:54:00 Seeing as currently there no 64bit software or OS on the market,
What about Linux and Windows 64 is just about out.
