Surely you don't think that anyone who buys a computer should take an electronics course first.
Remember that only about 1% of comps. are bought by experts. The rest are bought by dumb buggers like me. I still can't understand why you should pay ,say, $900, for a graphics card when a $100 one will do the job for you.
And do you experts look at every part in a TV before you buy one. Same logic applies.

290524 2004-11-12 19:20:00 Sorry JJJJJ,
I would reply at length, but I am presently occupied with testing and evaluating the contents of several packs of muesli before buying tomorrows breakfast.
Some people like Dell, some like HP, some even like Packard Bell,
But for me, I think I will have a 'puter that has more effort put into component selection than the advertising campaign.
If you just want a box with less user input than a wall clock, by all means, select the catchiest TV jingle and buy the product. You deserve each other.
And, I demand the right to be wrong, you should have the same right.

Enjoy your weekend

Nope,But if they make the effort to ask for a bit of advice then....thats what we are here for.

I know a local TV tech,i would be a goose if i went and asked him to recomend a tv then turned around and then said "oh la de da da expert indeed, what would you know?,Cant you see that the shop down the road sold 200 of **** brand last month alone, and they have a free leather whip with every unit,And a huge 21" screen, and outstanding stereo speakers.Look, its all here in this brightly coloured mailer, hell it even has 48 billion PMPO.

TV tech "Look,i would advise against it,You can do much better"

"Ego tripper,I own a TV,I know as much as you do ,I have watched TV for 22 years"

Absolutly stupid scenerio, and one that happens here all the time.

Do you people also know more then your mechanics, accountents, plumber?

290526 2004-11-12 20:09:00 My father is in the same boat . For about 3 months he's been talking about buying his 1st PC . So far he has asked me about most of the 'over the counter' deals from chain store etc .
My answer is always the same . Find a good local PC shop . Ask around . Talk to people and find out about their service .

I agree with metla fully about this . The vast majority of people will get far better support from their local shop than they will ever get from an 0800 number . The hardware will be better quality . They wont have some idiotic recovery disk, and they will have a windows disk .

5 minutes of decent research is worth alot more than any pre packaged deal .

If Dad lived in Wanganui then I know where I would tell him to buy from . :)

I called in at Metla's workplace a couple of months ago. From what I saw on the workbench, I could have sworn he was installing good bits into a Dell case ......

290528 2004-11-12 20:37:00 I bought my first PC from PCDirect about twelve years ago. The reason I bought from them was because of their advertisements in PC World. In fact in the first couple of years I learned everything I know from PC World. Then one day I noticed that everytime some product got a good write up there was also a large advertisement for the product on the following pages.
I am not critiseing PC World, but pointing out , look carefully at recomendations. FROM ANY SOURCE.

> Because my work bench is a tad small for one, the parts are not readily available, i won't have to bugger around getting it certified, wof and registered and its difficult to assemble a car with a phillips screwdriver and needlenose pliers.

But as a concept or a parrallel it works. Nobody would build their own car today. Many of us don't even open the bonnet to do anything but to add oil or water, but It's not that long ago that cars were basic enough to be built at home in the shed... then Henry Ford made it more attractive to buy a mass produced car.

> You would find that even the most auto illlterate of car buyers input a great deal of thought into a purchase , if not on the technical side then the financial side. Using your argument every one would be driving around in Ladas and Yugos. putting the same amount of input into a computer purchase is not an unrealistic expectation.

I don't believe that for a minute! Many, many people be a car, even a new one, based on redculous considerations like colour, space for pets, coffee cup holder etc. Cost is veery often a major consideration. Lada and Yugo are an extreme case, but listening to the other side of this argumant why aren't the streets full of Porches? or even cheaper performance cars? Isn't the Laser on of the top selling cars world wide? But it's full of crap parts and mass assembled. Again, if build or quality is the main issue, what aren't we all using Apple MAcs?

Cool, I like that. It's right up there with "I have a dream..."

The point you miss, Metla, as usual. There is more to be considered than just quality. Just as cost isn't the main issue either. Most people go somewhere between the two. For some people saving for a computer takes a long, long timee (not every one wants to line the pockets on finance company who gives a kickback to the retailer), when they get to $1000 they have the option of buying a cheapie or saving for a few more months. We live in a "now" society and many of them will buy the cheapie, simply because they don't see enough difference between the $1K, $1500 and $2K offerings. They go to a reputable company because they feel safer (rightly or wrongly). When Harvey Normans came to NZ they became "reputable" overnight largely because they marketed very, very well. That's marketing for you, it's business - I'm sure that if you had a marketing brain you could market a good product that wiped the floor with your competitors, including chain stores. Unfortunately you left the evolutionary ladder too early.

I don't believe that any general home user needs to spend over $2000 for a home PC. Even at $2K I'd need to be convinced that they really needed need that sort of power. But the vast majority of sales people see either the profit margin or commision cheque and upsize them "do you want fries with that?". A typical example is a friend who recently bought a $3000 PC. All he wants to do is play the odd game, surf the internet, chat to family overseas and update his CV. A cheap sub $1500 PC would have been just fine. The sales person cunfused him with all sorts of buzzwords, made him feel small for not understanding what he was talking about and effectively bullied him into spending twice as much as he really needed to.

Look, by all means keep discussing the new computer issue if you have to, but will you please both keep the personal insults out of it!

The forum has been very pleasant to visit over the the last few days thanks to Bruce's broom but you two are rather spoiling it somewhat . :-(

Just pack it in .
