290411 2004-11-11 05:54:00 Hi .

A friend and I have decided to setup a WLAN link between our two houses - we have line of sight and are only about 700m away as the crow flies . Both of us are up high .

We want to (for now) just connect wirelessly between us two (we will look at expanding this later on) . Cost is not really an issue, and we can get the hardware resonably easy from Borg .

However, I have very little idea of how to set this up . What settings do we put on our respective AP's (Both D-link 900+) and then how do we connect to it from our individual PC's/file servers .

We can if necessary run Linux off both P . C's if this is easier

Any assistance appreciated .

Ash

290412 2004-11-11 06:08:00 Hey.
Me and my mate were planning to do this a while ago - i even asked a pretty similar question here.
I got a stack of links, which i can't remeber, and advice, but in the end it came down to Line Of Sight, which we didn't have!
So can you guys see each others house? or the roof.
Becuase we are about 3-400m away, but with about 2 sets of trees in between us, and a shed, and we couldn't even get the weakest of signal.
So im just waiting for the WiMax to come out...

But if you have LOS, a good aerial should do it.
Cheers

290413 2004-11-11 06:34:00 Yeah, I can see most of his house and from the roof of my place all of it, no real trees in the way or anything .

Those links would be appreciated .

290414 2004-11-11 07:47:00 ppffffttt 700m, if you want distance, think 60km, thats what im after/lookin into. people set up nodes and you can get huge distances, even with 2 people . but you will need the gear like a good antenna etc Prescott (11)
290415 2004-11-11 08:33:00 Hey Prescott, is that with Line of Sight?
Cos like me and my mate are about 300m away, but a few trees in the way - can you use any sort of booster or anything??

290418 2004-11-11 08:42:00 screwed that post up, wasnt meant to have those bolded sentences, sorry
and 60km is a tad overkill to, i think there was mention of 60km on that site, but there is for sure one from 13km raduis, and tellin you what gear you need
