290189 2004-11-10 19:44:00 Hey guys - just wanting to send a hard drive back to Western Digital for a warranty repair, and it says I need to store the hard drives in a ESD bag prior to shipping.

Is the hard plastic case it came in suitable, or do i still need the ESD bag as well?

290190 2004-11-10 19:56:00 Drive manufacturers are usually very specific about packaging . If you are dealing with them direct, you'd have to comply .

If you are in NZ, is there any reason you're not getting the dealer you got the drive from to do this?

290191 2004-11-10 20:01:00 I would be inclined to say to get an ESD bag.

Is it possible for you to send it back to the company who you bought it from, and let them handle the warranty claim? Technically under the CGA, the place you bought it from is responsible for handling warranty claims.

290192 2004-11-10 20:14:00 I had to do the same thing with this CPU when I had to return it to Intel Malaysia .

I also took this CPU back to the place, where I purchased it from, BUT was told it had to go back to Intel, so I could get a replacement . And because it was still under warranty .

So, I had to phone Intel NZ . They gave me the details of when the courier would pick it up etc via email . How to package it (I had to use / tape a bit of cardboard, since I threw the intel box away (once I had purchased it) .

Intel also supplied the documents etc for customs .

From then on, Intel communicated via email . I kept track of the package on the net . And after 2 weeks, the replacement arrived! And Intel paid for the courier, and the CPU going to Malaysia and back (which was good of them)!

Very good service from Intel .

290193 2004-11-10 21:11:00 Yeah, unfortunately i bought the Sata drives from Trademe about 6 months ago. Picked up 2 X 200gig drives for $400 then, but made the mistake of putting them too close to each other in my tower case.

End result, I think the heat has damaged the drives but hasn't quite killed them. So sending them off as they have a 3 yr international warranty on them.

Anyone know where I can get a ESD bag from? Will PC stores give them to me?

Cheers,

Lo.

290194 2004-11-10 21:25:00 It would be worth a try asking, but I think many would keep them to re-ship OEM components with.

If you know anybody who has recently bought new parts for their PC, they might still have the packaging around.

290195 2004-11-10 21:30:00 I know what u mean by that Loh. I just found out the other day, that the SATA in this, was around 50 degrees lol (it was in a slot above an 80gb IDE).

With a program that shows the temp of hdds. I put an 80mm fan in the front of the case. And that brought both hdd's down to 32-35 degrees.

And shifted the IDE down 2 slots in the case as well.
