290584 2004-11-11 08:43:00 Hi all.
I've got some issues with my memory (pc, not mind)
This started happening after a clean format/install and it never used to happen before it.
But i opened Windows Media Player 9, and went to play a file, and i get an error such as:

Application popup: Media Event Sink Window: wmplayer.exe - Application Error : The instruction at "0x1d1c4e86" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".

I upgraded to v10, same thing, i can't play video, dvds, cds, wmas, mp3... nothing

So i installed winamp (after spending a few afternoons looking into it with no luck) and thts fine
I also switched to Opera a few weeks ago, and i'm getting errors with that occasionaly and it crashes (thank god for its 'continue from last session feature!)

heres an example:
Application popup: Media Event Sink Window: opera.exe - Application Error : The instruction at "0x1d1c4e86" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".

I've just put up with this also.
But now, i just installed the Topsin demo from the latest PCW mag, and after going into the game, it crashes, and i get another error similar to those two.
Anyone have any ideas as to whats wrong?

Cheers

290585 2004-11-11 08:48:00 pc specs please:D
if you have like 2 sticks of ram or so, try taking one out and find which one is dodgie, or just swap the ram with some other stuff you have lying around, are your drivers up-to-date?

290586 2004-11-11 09:03:00 Hey man, we meet again :P
Um, XP Pro, SP2, Athlon 1800, 512mb DDR and 256mb DDR.
Yea, i thought about that - but i thought i'll try it tomorow - can't be bothered doing it tonight!!

290587 2004-11-11 09:26:00 Hi, are the 2 sticks of RAM from the same manufacturer and are they the same specification? You might also want to try out MemTest (http://www.memtest86.com/) <- an oldie but a goodie andrew93 (249)

290589 2004-11-11 09:35:00 I'm not to sure, i'll check tomorow. fergie (424)
290590 2004-11-11 09:39:00 it could also be your graphics card(if you have one), might wanna get the latest drivers for them, since this is happening in games too, post back your findings. Prescott (11)
290591 2004-11-11 09:47:00 yea, got a ATi radeon 9600xt.
Have updated them, still same.
But i'm thinking it is the RAM, i'll do some tests tomorow

290592 2004-11-12 21:59:00 hi all.
Well, i took out one stick of memory ( ihave a 256 and a 512) booted up - same thing happened in the demo and media player, so swapped the sticks over, same thing, put both back in, still the same...

now i'm stumped!

290593 2004-11-12 22:04:00 May actually be the motherboard. But that's not the kind of thing you go swapping to check.

Have you run Memtest86 yet? It is possible that both sticks are faulty (may have happened in power surge etc).
