290833 2004-11-12 06:02:00 Sorry - I find the "don't understand the question" excuse a bit weak. Look at the question in the post and tell me which part you don't understand. Maybe i'm to old for you txters but it seems perfectly clear to me Dally (6292)

Comp64 = Sports64 x 5

Sports04 = Sports64 + 10

Comp04 = Sports04 x 5 x 3.5

10,500 = Comp04 = Sports04 x 5 x 3.5
therefore Sports04 = 600

> Write an equation to model this

There are a number of equations :
the basic ones :
Comp64 = Sports64 x 5
Comp04 = Sports04 x 17.5
Sports04 = Sports64 + 10
and substituting values :
Comp64 = (Sports04 - 10) x 5
Comp04 = ( (Comp64 / 5) +10 ) x 17.5
or, Comp04 = (Comp64 x 3.5) + (10 x 17.5)

> and find the number
> of sports played at Olympic games 40 years ago.

Sports64 = Sports04 - 10 = 600 - 1 = 590
Comp64 = 590 x 5 = 2950

Proof1 : Comp04 = ( (Comp64 / 5) +10 ) x 17.5
10500 = ( (2950 / 5) +10 ) x 17.5
10500 = 10500
and
Proof2 : Comp04 = (Comp64 x 3.5) + (10 x 17.5)
10500 = (2950 x 3.5) + 175
10500 = 10325 + 175
10500 = 10500

290835 2004-11-12 06:38:00 Sorry Andrew93 but you have the wrong answer Dally (6292)
290836 2004-11-12 07:03:00 700. As for the equation - it's too long ago..... :D :D Miami Steve (2128)
290837 2004-11-12 07:09:00 Miami Steve Your answer is wrong too but we are getting closer Dally (6292)
290838 2004-11-12 07:26:00 Is this a trick question depending on the interpretation of "10 more sports"? andrew93 (249)
290839 2004-11-12 07:27:00 or the "3.5 times greater".

If it''s one of those stoopid questions that what a complete WOFTAM.

290840 2004-11-12 07:34:00 wats the answer then and how do you know it ApeNz (4220)
290841 2004-11-12 07:34:00 Bugger the formula. The number of sports played at the 1964 Olympics was 19 - and that's a fact (www.cbc.ca).
