Preinstalled versions of Windows are normally OEM and tied to the computer it was installed on. Installing it on another computer is breaking the rules. ;-)

290742 2004-11-12 00:58:00 This can be done ther are various articles on "The M/S Tax Refund" that explain how to do this in detail.

Warning This WILL be very hard work.

Much simpler to buy from a retailer reseller who will supply with out M/S tax.

1 You Must not use the O/S even once.

2 If it is preinstalled you must refuse the EULA terms on first boot.

3 if the system is supplied with a recovery disk only (And you really want to have this fight) have the retailer remove the O/S and help you with your claim.

If the system has a full install C/D and not a recovery C/D it may be simpler to buy a new H/D.

Sell the old H/D O/S disk And COA as a set. this will be with in the grey area of the EULA as the O/S has never been used and is still with the "Hard ware supplied with it"

Simple way,

Find a realistic retailer or buy a product at the right price and dispose of the unwanted M/S.

People having issues like your's should really make their @ address (Or temp ones) available in profiles for a while.

an @ add there are sometimes issues that can not be discussed in forum, because of forum rules.

Complaining about others lack of respect for same, and the brakeing said. would make me a Hypocrite.

You have a budget, and a problem that requires grey area advice, a temporary H/Mail add can be very useful at such times, after you remove its listing and discard it.

Privacy is still ensured.

290746 2004-11-12 06:22:00 I agree with drb1 that this would be simpler if you bought the computer from a computer shop / assembler rather than a retailer - that way there is no pre-installed OS or refunds to worry about. andrew93 (249)
290747 2004-11-12 23:30:00 "windows rebate linux" to Google will give some entertainment. :D

The link titled "Toshiba/Microsoft saga" is the story by someone who has received a rebate.
