291490 2004-11-14 00:24:00 Take it out and shake it maybe?

I wouldnt trust refilled cartridges. They could stuff your printer or the heads up on it.

291491 2004-11-14 00:33:00 It looks as if it's an intelligent cartridge. ;-) Printer manufacturers don't make any money selling printers; the ink is liquid gold.

Gadgets appeared to reset some (Epson?) chipped cartridges for refillers, but of course the whole idea is that it's a smart chip --- it knows who programmed it.

291492 2004-11-14 00:38:00 Not had any trouble from commercially refilled or 3rd party cartridges with HP printers and the heads are on the cartridge in HP's.

I just click ok to the low ink warning and it goes away for awhile (HP Deskjet 5550) using both 3rd party and HP cartridges, get another 1/4 reem of paper with B&W depending on quality setting. I don't use low ink cartridges when good quality is required.

291493 2004-11-14 00:47:00 Chipped cartridges know they are empty. The chips aren't meters; they count down to empty. That's it, unless they are reset by an external circuit. They don't have an imp with a dip stick, and a keyboard. :O Graham L (2)
291494 2004-11-14 01:03:00 I don't think the HP ones are chipped Graham, it's the printer firmware or just drivers that count it down, on what basis I don't know but, it is way early .

Epsom lost a case in the US against chip mod scripts which came with 3rd party cartridges which allowed the use of the 3rd party cardridges in Epsoms printers . There has also been a suggestion that such chips cheat a bit as to the ink level, along the lines of the HP "early warning" .

291495 2004-11-14 01:09:00 I understand the count down, thought there might be a log file somewhere that could be cleared, or reset upwards I suppose?
I've never had the slightest trouble with refills, and as the heads are on the cartridge, any trouble should stop there surely.

291496 2004-11-14 01:16:00 I know HPs have made a considerable number of models without chips in the cartridges. I have seen a definite statement about this model.

The head is included in the cartridge, because this is the way HP can guarantee the print quality. They definitely don't want you to refill their cartridges. They never have. ;-)

All the printer does is: "have I got a cartridge?", and, "is it empty?".
