291170 2004-11-13 01:04:00 Hi, lately my DVD-ROM drive has been slightly intermittant.

I posted a thread a week or so ago, about how it couldn't read DVDs anymore, only CDs.

It then strangely fixed itself. Later, I added a CD-RW drive to the same channel as the DVD, as slave. They didn't seem to like each other though - or so I thought. The BIOS detected both fine on the correct Master/Slave.

But Windows was another story. The CD-RW drive worked sweet as, but when I put a disc in the DVD drive (CD or DVD), it detects it but cannot reliably view files - scambled data and extremely slow (> 1 min for text file) speed etc.

Now, even when it is on its own again it still has the same problem. I have also tried switching ribbon cable to another brand new one, to no avail.

And now, Windows doesn't detect it at all, and the BIOS detects it as:

16X DVD-POM Drive OA

Normally it should read

16X DVD-ROM Drive OEM

The strange thing is physically it seems in perfect condition. Disc's spin up fine - I am pretty sure it is a communication problem rather than faulty laser etc type of thing.

Is it time for the bin? Or is there hope?

But do I dare reconnect the CD-RW?

No (it's crap anyway, I'll use it as a CD-ROM drive in another PC).
