2004-11-16 00:22:00 | Login as root to run modprobe (or any other system type thing). ;-) The system programmes aren't in your path as a "user". The fact that the mouse doesn't appear in the /proc/bus/... indicates that the system can't recognise it. If it was recocnised, the appropriate moduiles would have been loaded. This is ODD. I would think that HID should be on for all modern kernels. It might be compiled in, without using modules, but in that case the mouse should be working. ;-) Have you a USB keyboard on another computer, or can you borrow one and try it? It's the same set of code involved, so if a USB keyboard works (and it shouldn't need any setting up) onj your system, the mouse OUGHT to. I don't know if you need the Legacy USB option set on or off in the BIOS ... I shouldn't think so, but it might be worth trying it both ways. :D

2004-11-16 07:44:00 | Sorry about the delay I've got a life these days, and it gets in the way of posting at the forum, and trying to fix the mouse . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . :-) This annoying "life" thing has got to go then :-) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I logged in as root, here's the output of the bits that wouldn't work as a standard user . To me it seems that it is on the most basic level that the system goes "USB mousy mouse, what's that" . But i'm not going to pretend that i really know what i'm doing, or understand the "instructions" that Graham pointed me in the direction of . flaptop:~ # modprobe hid flaptop:~ # modprobe usbmouse FATAL: Module usbmouse not found . flaptop:~ # modprobe mouse FATAL: Module mouse not found . flaptop:~ # lsmod Module Size Used by hid 40896 0 appletalk 33972 0 ax25 58476 0 ipx 26540 0 raw 39840 0 nls_utf8 2304 0 edd 9368 0 joydev 10304 0 sg 35616 0 st 39196 0 sd_mod 20224 0 sr_mod 16292 0 scsi_mod 108876 4 sg,st,sd_mod,sr_mod ide_cd 36740 0 cdrom 36892 2 sr_mod,ide_cd nvram 8456 0 usbserial 29040 0 parport_pc 35520 1 lp 11044 0 parport 37832 2 parport_pc,lp cpufreq_userspace 5796 0 longrun 2440 0 speedstep_lib 3712 0 freq_table 4612 0 thermal 12680 0 processor 16680 1 thermal fan 4228 0 button 6416 0 battery 8836 0 snd_seq_oss 31232 0 snd_seq_midi_event 7680 1 snd_seq_oss ac 4996 0 snd_seq 54928 6 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event snd_seq_device 8456 2 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq snd_pcm_oss 57512 0 snd_mixer_oss 18944 1 snd_pcm_oss snd_ali5451 22088 8 snd_ac97_codec 62468 1 snd_ali5451 snd_pcm 97032 2 snd_pcm_oss,snd_ali5451 snd_page_alloc 11528 1 snd_pcm snd_timer 25860 2 snd_seq,snd_pcm snd 61444 28 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event,snd_seq,snd_seq_dev ice,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_ali5451,snd_ac97 _codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer soundcore 9056 1 snd af_packet 20872 0 ipt_TCPMSS 4480 1 ipt_TOS 2688 9 ehci_hcd 27908 0 ohci_hcd 19332 0 ipt_state 2176 60 ipt_LOG 5760 56 efficeon_agp 7968 0 agpgart 30888 1 efficeon_agp evdev 9856 0 usbcore 103644 6 hid,usbserial,ehci_hcd,ohci_hcd 8139too 23168 0 mii 5248 1 8139too ip6t_LOG 5632 2 ip6t_REJECT 7296 3 ip6table_mangle 2816 0 ipt_REJECT 6656 3 iptable_mangle 3072 1 iptable_filter 2944 1 ip_nat_ftp 4848 0 iptable_nat 22060 1 ip_nat_ftp ip_conntrack_ftp 72112 1 ip_nat_ftp ip_conntrack 31280 4 ipt_state,ip_nat_ftp,iptable_nat,ip_conntrack_ftp ip_tables 17280 8 ipt_TCPMSS,ipt_TOS,ipt_state,ipt_LOG,ipt_REJECT,ip table_mangle,iptable_filter,iptable_nat ip6table_filter 2816 1 ip6_tables 18576 4 ip6t_LOG,ip6t_REJECT,ip6table_mangle,ip6table_filt er ipv6 236800 16 ip6t_REJECT subfs 7424 1 dm_mod 50300 0 reiserfs 241488 1 flaptop:~ # :-) Chris

2004-11-17 01:38:00 | It seems that Suse 9 . 1 has a problem with USB mice . :_| Apparently fixed in 9 . 2 . ;-) It's apparently to do with the way control of the USB devices is handed over from the BIOS to the kernel, so you're right in your idea that its at the low level . I would try the BIOS setup options for USB keyboard/mouse . It's often called "Legacy" support, but you should be able to find it . Try it disabled first . Since you don't need USB keyboard or mouse during the boot of a laptop, there should be no problem . And if the BIOS hasn't controlled the USB mouse, perhaps the Linux kernel can take control with no problems . ;-) To see what happens at boot time, try dmesg | grep mouse or dmesg | less(as root, again) . | 291387 | 2004-11-17 07:46:00 | The only relevant lines produced by running command dmesg | less IMHO, were these: mice: PS/2 mouse device common for all mice usb 2-2: new low speed USB device using address 2 usb 2-2: config 1 has an invalid interface number: 1 but max is 0 usb 2-2: can't read configurations, error -22 usb 2-2: new low speed USB device using address 3 usb 2-2: config 1 has an invalid interface number: 1 but max is 0 usb 2-2: can't read configurations, error -22 usb usb4: Product: EHCI Host Controller usb usb4: Manufacturer: Linux 2.6.5-7.111-default ehci_hcd usb usb4: SerialNumber: 0000:00:0a.3 hub 4-0:1.0: USB hub found hub 4-0:1.0: 6 ports detected usb 2-2: new low speed USB device using address 4 usb 2-2: device not accepting address 4, error -110 usb 2-2: new low speed USB device using address 5 usb 2-2: config 1 has an invalid interface number: 1 but max is 0 usb 2-2: can't read configurations, error -22 And the command dmesg | grep mouse produced simply this: flaptop:~ # dmesg | grep mouse mice: PS/2 mouse device common for all mice Now for a reboot so i can see what the BIOS settings are, :-) and change them. :-) Chris flaptop:~ #

2004-11-17 08:14:00 | Hi again...... The above was done with USB enabled, and the legacy thingy set to "all device" options on the later are: enable all "devices", "diabled", and "no mice" The only change i've made is to change legacy to "disabled" ...of course the mouse still doesn't work The lines i quoted in the above post are pretty much the same now as well. I'll try "no mice" and then consider another distribution. I am of the opinion the SuSE9.1 is all bling, and no foundation. Maybe there are reasons why 9.1 fits on one CD, where as SuSE8 was on 7! :-( Chris

2004-11-17 08:51:00 | 3rd try..... USB function... enabled Legacy...............no mice 4th try USB function DISABLED Legacy...........no mice Same result. I'm not going to try another combination. I must thank everyone who volunteered their time and knowledge here, but perhaps an alternative distribution is a better idea??? Any suggestions anyone? ]:) Chris
