291585 2004-11-14 20:58:00 These electrolytics are not quite the same as 'conventional' ones . As BM says electrolytics have been used for yonks, so why the problem now?

I had to replace one in my 1932 Ecko radio a few years ago, after the set had been standing idle for some time .

The caps used on motherboards are extra low ESR as compared with ordinary ones you'd buy from DSE or Jaycar . I did read up about them when this problem first broke in the news , but forget the details now .

I expect Google will give the story . I think there was also an article in PC World about them .

There was quite a nice little ESR and Low Ohms test meter described in Electronics Australia a few years ago, and the kit can still be bought from DSE (I think) .

On mine on the front panel it gives some typical ESR figures for ordinary electrolytics .

For example, a 4700uf 10v rating says 0 . 23 ohms .
I would imagine that a low ESR one would be less than 0 . 1 ohm, maybe lower .

What a Circus, the article recons 4000hrs of continuous ripple current is the Benchmark but these Capacitors are doing 2000hrs and less!

Well, by my calculations 4000hrs is less than 6 Months!!!??? They must be joking? :D
