291447 2004-11-15 01:01:00 ok i see, now i think you should try the idea of that long range wlan and use that jetstream sharing of your friend, why does he have jetstream when you dont and he is only 300m away, strange and not really fair from telecom.... Prescott (11)
291448 2004-11-15 02:03:00 > Do you use their services Megaman??

Ahh... u must have misread, 2 mates, one 1-2km away who has Jetstream, and the other 300m who can't get it also

291450 2004-11-15 05:46:00 I also rung Baycity, they offer ADSL and Wireless, and only resort to satelite if really have to.
And i see why!
$3000-$4000 installation (incl the Sat)
$150 odd (can't remeber) for 256k/128k 600m limit

lol

291451 2004-11-15 06:52:00 Email wired country, ask them when they are introducing B.O.P
(broadband over powerlines)
It can't be that far away.

291452 2004-11-15 07:09:00 BPL (Broadband over PowerLine) is very unlikely to be "anytime soon"

It requires a significant investment at a local level (each transformer) and overseas its hardly used (mostly due to technical issues such as radio interference). Every streetlight becomes a transmitter source of interference that wipes out a lot of local radio reception, just as one example. Some small scale use in Scotland in a trial.

It works, but is probably more expensive per customer than ADSL over the phone line and would be horrendously expensive unless a whole community was to subscribe. It still requires a conventional broadband pipe from the transformer, so not a lot is gained.

It has been tried (and abandoned I think) in one area in Auckland as just not economic.

The only solution for fergie is to get as many people affected by the non-availability in that local area as possible to register interest with Telecom.

291453 2004-11-15 07:15:00 Yea, looks liek that now!

As for BOP, we were thinking (just an idea, probably to big for us!) of doing this for our Y.E.S business, just for our area, but the costs were way to high, and with ADSL speeds on teh rise, it looked like a very poor option
