291279 2004-11-14 03:50:00 My view is that PCs are better for more advanced users, whereas Macs are better for people who are happy with something a bit less flexible which gets the job done quickly and easily. Ironically, however, I have found that most first time buyers tend to go for the PC.

I have been using Macs for some time now and I have always found them to be reliable and easy to use. I disagree with anyone who suggests that Macs are more expensive, because Apple's pricing has become more competitive in recent times and it could be argued that the total cost of ownership of a Mac is lower due better security, reliability and ease of use.

I also disagree with anyone who suggests that there is a lack of hardware choice, as I am yet to find a digital camera, printer, scanner, etc. which doesn't work on Mac OSX. Of course, if you want to be picky about what brand of video card, networking card, etc. you want, then you don't have this flexibility with a Mac, but that's the PC's niche IMO. Gamers, in particular, are probably the sort of people who would be better off with a PC.

The only thing that frustrates me about the Mac is the cost of software, but the range of software included as standard with OSX is very good and most people should not have to buy much else.

291280 2004-11-14 04:20:00 I read somewhere in an article a while back that 34% MORE Mac users are online than PC users, and overall that Mac users know better how to use their computer than PC users.

Wonder where linux fits in......

291281 2004-11-14 04:25:00 All very informative replies - even if I'm not 'completely' up to half the 'lingo' that's going on here!!!

As what do I want a computer for - definitely surfing the net - something that is quick...I also have alot of old video tapes that contain family footage I would like to have preserved onto DVD (i.e. need a dvd-rw)...

Not so much concerned about the gaming possibilities, as that's looked after in our household with an XBox....but educational software for youngsters would be an essential.

I originally was looking at a laptop, but for use by children, opted for the desk top :)

Thanks again for all your views :)

Just to correct you POTUS..

PC's are superior because:

They have a greater range of operating systems;
They have a greater range of software;
Easier to upgrade;
More ergonmically friendly (eg multi button mouses);
Less expensive;
More powerful;
More technical support;
More modifiable;
More abundant (= easier to work on in different environments, eg home/work)

291285 2004-11-14 06:37:00 Greg S, just repeating what you already said is rather childish. You have your oint of view and I have mine. I took each one of your points and either validated them or atherwise, If you disagree then please explain your reasoning. But simply repeating you statements is rather boorish. POTUS (5276)

Childish and boorish!? heh heh Petty insults are a worthwhile price to pay for knowing the superiority of PC's over Macs :p

With the greatest respect Greg, trying to pick a fight with me is unfair to the originator of the topic. Your last 2 posts were both unhelpful at best.
