291575 2004-11-14 07:49:00 Crikey I keep getting confused about whether MSI or Abit were the ones with dodgy capacitors. I'm going to stay away from both for a while. :p

Interesting story Terry, got a link?

291576 2004-11-14 07:55:00 It was both MSI and ABIT, but I think that was only one small batch of boards - it should all be fixed now! I'm sure it happened something like a year ago. wintertide (1306)
291577 2004-11-14 08:08:00 Here's one link (www.spectrum.ieee.org) to the story, Google throws up lots if you type in bad capacitors motherboards. Terry Porritt (14)
291578 2004-11-14 08:19:00 It is similar in a way to the fake L2 cache chip scandal.

This goes back to when memory was expensive.

There were a lot of 486/586 motherboards sold especially by Edge Computers that had fake chips soldered into the boards, "place-fillers" Edge called them when they were found out.

They even went so far as to re-write the bios , so that the bios reported 256k of cache, when in fact there was none.
Needless to say, in the end Edge were prosecuted:

I had one of these boards which were being sold cheaply after they were dumped.

291579 2004-11-14 08:28:00 Apparently these are bad:

Lelon
Luxon
Tayeh
Jackcon
I,Q
JPCON
Chhsi

And these are good:

Rubycon
Sanyo
Nichicon
Nippon (NIC)
Fuji

I hope I don't get too paranoid about my capacitors

291580 2004-11-14 11:27:00 Funny you should ask this... recently I fixed a family friend's computer, replacing his MSI K7N420 with a Gigabyte mobo. I got the old MSI as part of renumeration for my time and workmanship, and every Lelon 1000uF capacitor on it was leaky or popped. All the rest, Rubycons, were fine. So I figured I'd give cap replacement a crack... no skin off my nose if I failed...

After a bit of looking around, I got some suitable replacements from Jaycar (I was considering getting some Panasonics via Farnell) which all up cost me a little over ten bucks

Replacing them wasnt that hard, though having a decent solder station helps ;) Took about an hour to replace all 18 borked caps

Anyway, the old:

and the fixed:

Still waiting on an old TBird Wrathlon (heh) to arrive. I've got half a gig of DDR floating about (as you do) and a spare 80 gig drive (as you do), as well as an Antec PSU (as you do) so if it works, I'll have myself a $10 server :)

291581 2004-11-14 18:11:00 The problem was wider than just MSI and Abit and it would have been more than one small batch before the problem was discovered. About a year ago I heard that IBM contractors in NZ were having to replace over 600 motherboards with this potential problem. PaulD (232)
291582 2004-11-14 18:35:00 Horrors, just used a very bright light and dental mirror to look under the caps on my Abit, and they are JPCONS :O

However, this board has been running about 14 hours a day for the last 3+ years, all the caps look ok, so it doesn't owe me anything.

If they do go poof, it gives me an excuse to upgrade, sans fait rien, as they say, :)

291583 2004-11-14 19:54:00 Good grief, what is the life expectancy of an electrolytic capacitor these days?

Struth, I’ve got some still OK in some pre-war radios! :D

This board is about the same age as yours Terry and the leaky ones are green in colour but there are a few black ones made by “JACKCON” that seem OK . (Well, not bulging or leaking)

Replacing the capacitors doesn’t seem an option in this case as the pc board is damaged with corrosion . :(

Frankly, I find it hard to believe the darn thing has been working up to quite recently such is the damage .

I’d like to have a go at a warranty claim seeing the problem seems well documented and the good name of the manufacturer is at stake, but aren’t quite sure of the best approach .

Anybody had any success in this department with this MB? :)

291584 2004-11-14 20:11:00 Sounds like it is not tied to just one board/make . Mine is a Gigabyte 7VA

Two weeks ago, when installing another HDD, I noticed that several Electro's where bulging on my motherboard . Just the 3300uF (6 . 3V I think) caps only . Replaced OK .

Just a thing to keep in mind that the caps should be 105 degree versions, not the standard 85 degree ones .
