291425 2004-11-13 21:12:00 Hi.
are there any NZ ISP's that offer 2 way satellite internet access? Like Ihug Satellite, but without having to need dial up for uploading.
And if not, would it be possible for someone in NZ to join up to an overseas ISP that offers it, such as Aussie?

Cheers

291426 2004-11-13 21:23:00 None that I know of, and the Aussie one is unlikely to have any satellite footprint in NZ.

There is a significant cost in equipment to have a terrestrial uplink, its a lot more than just a "modem", plus the costs are huge.

291427 2004-11-13 21:27:00 oh, ok.

Just that i'm sick and tired of been on dial up, and getting this from telecom:

Thanks for your email. I have double checked your availability and yes, your exchange is ADSL enabled. However, Jetstream requires copper cable to work and you are connected to the exchange via PCM cable. For Jetstream to work for you we would need to install a Conklin in your local cabinet (NB/E), however there are currently no planned upgrades for this.

and then:

They cost several thousand dollars to install so obviously there needs to be a large number of people wanting one before anything can be actioned.

Which sucks...
As i'm only limited to Xtra wireliss (RIP OFF) or ihug Sat, but it still hogs the phone line, so i'm just looking around to see if theres ANYTHING available to us..

291428 2004-11-13 21:43:00 Typical install costs start at about $5,000 and would require a large dish.

Data costs are quite high (Satellites are very expensive for uplink)

291429 2004-11-13 21:46:00 oh, nar that post above was their response regarding JetStream...
It looks as if i'll be stuck on Dial Up then..

291430 2004-11-13 21:50:00 My comments refer to Australian costs for 2 way satellite.

In remote regions of Australia where there is no phone access, a Government subsidy is available for installation of the terrestrial uplink. Otherwise nobody could afford it there either.

291431 2004-11-13 21:55:00 Yea, i was just looking at a site (aussie) taht commented about the subsidy.
It stated that installation costed $3400, but if you didn't have access to ISDN internet, you could get a subsidy of $1500, and if you didn't have access to ISDN AND DSL, you could get a subsidy of $3300 (so $100 fee)
I also saw on their maps that coverage went to NZ, so i emailed them seeing if the subsidy would apply to us, lol, i can only hope - seeing that the details of the subsidy where on an Australian Government site...

See if you can get your district council to get behind it and get evryone connected. Our district council got behind ours and thus we got JetStream years before we were scheduled for it to be rolled out.

no, and they have no plans to... (

As for the council, lol, me and another business woman also on my exchange (but not on thsi old technology) went to the council to get our exhchange upgraded!!
TC upgraded 95% of Taranaki's exchanges to support ADSL a year or 2 back, and didn;t updgrade the Normanby one (which i am on)
I saw a business woman in the town of Normanby starting a petition to get our exchange upgraded (as TC had no plans to do so) and contacted her, and together, with got a petition up - ppl taht would use it etc, adn went to the council, and yes, TC came and upgraded the exchange, but thei found out about this....

But i can always try, i'll email them now.
Cheers
