291180 2004-11-13 01:54:00 I have a Compaq Presario S5020AN and I have a slight problem with the Hard drive space, when I put the mouse over the C drive it tells me that it's a 32GB with 5GB of space left. However when I double click on the C drive and select all the files (including the hidden ones) and go to properties it tells me that I have only used 6GB of hard disk space which should leave me with 26GB to use. So I'm wondering where the other 21GB has gone.
I have ran Spybot, Adaware and Antivirus (Norton and AVG) and nothing was detected, I have done Disk Clean Up, Defrag and Error checkng and again no problems.
So where is the 21GB and how do I get it back

Cheers

What happens when you right-click the C Drive and choose Properties and the General Tab. How much free space do you have then?

291183 2004-11-13 03:10:00 seen this very similar thing on a pc recently it was showing only about 600Mb left from 40gb..........however after some testing I've concluded the drive is stuffed and about on it's last legs.........and not reading right because of that.......so I reccomend you run a drive test .......goto the manufacturers site and download a diagnostic program they'll have there........they all have them free...... drcspy (146)

You probably either have a virus that is stealing your space with strange undetectable files, or your hard drive is on its last legs, and is beginning to become corrupted.

I suggest you do a virus scan, and back up you important files fast.

But first, are you sure that it is set to show hidden files?

Perhaps you have accidently set a massive hidden swap file?

OK now that's strange. Is your antivirus updated?

Also, don't write off your HDD as the culprit until you have run the testing program from the manufacturer (Seagate, Western Digital etc).

it could be System Restore

Go to Control Panel > System > then go to the System restore tab then select your hard drive then go to settings

Then look for "disk space use", Then move the slider which every way you what e.g. more disk space used or less....

Hope this helps & let us know what the System Restore settings are? :)

Also when you are checking on your disk space are you going to My Computer, then right/left click on your hard drive > Properties???

291187 2004-11-13 05:04:00 Good point Stu - and good to see you back.

But System Restore shoudn't be taking up 21GB. Remember to make sure that hidden and "protected" files are shown.

And also, check your page file settings.

Go into System properties, Advanced tab, Virtual Memory, and make sure it is no more than about 1024MB. IMO that's the limit anybody should be having their swap file - any more is wastage. If its like 21500MB, then that's your problem. But like System restore, Windows shouldn't set it that outrageously high.

yeath, you have a Good point there george12, plus There could be a change that xineohp is reading the hard drive space wrong or is getting the hard drive info wrong. That’s why I asked This:

291189 2004-11-15 03:09:00 Sorry I got called away and I have only just got back
OK the System restore is at MAX 4025mb
and the Virtual Memory is set to 336MB
When I check my hard disk I am clicking on My Computer then I right click on C and then left click on properties. Still showing 21gb missing
