| 291208 | 2004-11-13 01:53:00 | Hi folks. I have downloaded Firefox and Thunderbird but have not made them my default browser etc. Still summing up the situation. However I have a couple of queries at this point. 1. If I make Thunderbird as my default mail administrator I wont be able to use Windows messenger. The alternative would be to download MSN I presume. Is this correct? 2. In my list of programs under "start up" Outlook Express is listed. This means that it automatically loads when I start up my computer. To remove Outlook Express from the start up list do I just left click on OE and drag and drop it into the main program list. Okay my friends, give me some encouragement to make Firefox / Thunderbird my default. I am still of the old school and reluctant to change. Cheers Smithie |

| 291210 | 2004-11-13 04:01:00 | Thanks Prescott for that. Much appreciated Ah I didnt realise I could still use Windows messenger if I didnt have or use Outlook Express. Geez I am learning all the time. I dont think I will remove/uninstal O E until I am conviced that Thunderbird is what I want. Thanks again mate Smithie |

Is this correct? I might be wrong here or got facts confused here, but I thought you could not use Windows messenger any more, since it did not support the new protocol? ?:| > I dont think I will remove/uninstal O E until I am > conviced that Thunderbird is what I want. You will have a hard time removing OE/IE since it is apart of the windows system, but I think it can be Done, as they has been posts on here with tip on how to remove it. |

Any rabbit armed with the Delete button can get rid of OE easily, but it's not exactly worth it. There are cleaner ways to remove it, too, but again it's not really worth it. |

| 291213 | 2004-11-13 05:57:00 | Theres an Updated windows messenger IIRC which supports the MSNv9 protocol. Personally I'd push Gaim (http://gaim.sf.net) rather than either of those two apps. I also use Thunderbird & Firefox soley :-) Gotta love the Mozilla Foundation for making some kick-ass software! B-) |

| 291214 | 2004-11-13 06:04:00 | OE is removable, it's still an optional extra with IE as far as I know and the system has no dependecies on it. Thunderbird is better by a good margin in my opinion. Murray P |

| 291215 | 2004-11-13 07:12:00 | Murray et al: I've switched from IE to Firefox as my default (No regrets at all ) while keeping IE in the background for stuff that needs it. But so far I haven't taken the equivalent email step - mainly because of space considerations. I have only 10gigs on my hard drive. A third of that's still empty, but I want to keep a reasonable amount spare... I thought Thunderbird would have to be an extra to Outlook Express's (unknown to me) size even when empty. Also I didn't know whether transferring my email folders - which are quite large - would be as simple as moving IE's Favourites were to Firefox's bookmarks. So if I take the plunge: (1) Is the transfer simple? (2) Any tips for space-saving on the Windows bits - like what can I delete & which parts aren't worth the trouble for the amount of space they save? |
