| 292202 | 2004-11-15 02:00:00 | Hi everyone, I am running a small network with a couple of PC's linked through a hub. I frequently connect HP Laser Printers with internal network cards to the hub so that I can test the printer network card. The PC's have Win XP and Win 98 and insofar as the network goes everything works well - same domain, same subnet mask, I can access each PC ok so no problems there. When I set up the printer on Win XP, I create a new TCP/IP post, assign the IP address and everything is cool - I can print to the printer through the hub. Unfortunately I am frequently *relegated* to the Win 98 PC to make way for Mrs A93 while she surfs the 'net. However, I can't do the same from the Windows 98 PC. I know I could "share" the printer off the XP PC but I want to be able to access the printer even if the other PC is switched off. If I try to set up a "network" printer it asks for the server name and doesn't recognise the TCP/IP address - even though I can ping it from the Win98 PC. If I try to set it up as a local printer and create a new TCP/IP port (as you do in XP) then there is no such option in Win 98. So how do I set up the printer to be a network printer on the Win 98 PC? I have had a quick search of this forum plus Google & HP and can't find what I am looking for so am looking to the members of PF1 for some advice. Thanks in Advance Andrew |

Here (www.canon.co.nz digital_copiers%2fcanlpr130.exe) is a direct link to Canon's LPR software. I have used this in the past and found it to work with any brand of printer. It is a 830KB download. You can also get other LPR utilities but most of them aren't free. |

Then go into the printer properties and add a port and you should see Canon LPR on the list. Select it then add IP address and for the print queue I just put in lp. That's and L and a P lowercase, nothing else. You should be able to leave everything as the default settings. |
