291791 2004-11-14 08:54:00 Is anyone having problems with the service dropping off on a regular basis?
This can happen up to 10 times in an hour and is somewhat frustrating. Have tried different modems and same prob so it's not the modem.
There's nothing else on the line (phones, filters etc) so it's not being caused by those - my guess is it's a Telecom issue but one they're not owning up to.

Anyone here connected to Quicksilver's ADSL service? What's it like?

291792 2004-11-14 09:15:00 No problems here... Quicksilvers ADSL is good, I've never had any problems with them. Ashley Matthews (550)

Nope, Iam on Xtra JetStream Explorer, & we have not had any of those problems.

291794 2004-11-14 09:58:00 I'd be looking at a line fault on your line from the exchange, call Telecom and ask for a line test, check with the ADSL helpdesk as they can also check your DSL logs.
Do you use a router / internal / USB modem ?
Check the logs on that also.
What is the bit rate recieved at your modem?

Are you in a urban area or out in the country?
How far from the exchange are you?

291795 2004-11-15 00:54:00 I've called Telecom and got them to take a look at their end, they think it could be a card problem.
The line in question (fortunately not mine!) is a rural one, however the people are only 1km from the exchange.
I've tried an internal PCI card, a Nokia M1122 router and a DSE router as well.

I'll let you know what Telecom find.

291796 2004-11-15 01:24:00 I have never had any problems with Xtra on the North Shore.
There is probably a fault in the local exchange.
Changing to another ISP will not help as it will still go through the same exchange.

291797 2004-11-23 11:41:00 Thanks to everyone who commented here.

Telecom spent days trying to figure this one out - but eventually sorted the problem by changing the port in the exchange.

NB: A lesson for the uninitiated!

If they change the port in the exchange, you won't have any internet connection for quite a few hours as apparently the new port/router arrangement needs to have the user ID etc loaded in to it and apparently this is all automated but does take some time - and their techs only work till 5pm - after that you have to wait for them to come back in the morning!!!

No one's DNS servers could be as bad as Xtra's.

> Anyone here connected to Quicksilver's ADSL service? What's it like?

Your ISP won't make any difference - you could be with any ISP at all and it still uses the same phone line, DSLAM, Line Card, etc etc etc.

As far as ADSL is concerned the only thing that differentiates ISP's is price (which is negligible across most) and value added services like helpdesk, spam filtering, virus scanning, yada yada yada.

Unless you start talking "BitStream" but thats a whole different kettle of carp.

Well I have been having the exact same problem, in Invercargill and I am with orcon,
did your connection work fine for a while, then suddenly start having the problems (for anywhere from an hour to a day) then all was fine again as this is the problem we have been having .

291800 2004-11-23 21:59:00 Same here, no problems with Quicksilver. Haven't had a dropped connection since I started using this modem.

Just waiting for the upgrade to 2Mbits to come through.... apparently Telecom has a backlog.... Why does that not surprise me?

cheers
