292237 2004-11-15 04:49:00 Press F8 / hold F8 down soon after bootup. A menu will appear, and safe mode will be an option. Select it then wait for XP to load in safe mode.

Then go to control panel /add remove programs, see if there's an entry relating to Nvidia drivers. If so, uninstall it, and remove the folder in c:/

Not much use if the folder is still there if its removed.

292238 2004-11-15 05:41:00 have you tried another monitor?, it may be faulty, have you considerd doing a format? its always good to do one atleast once a year, i do, it cleans out the rubbish that is left over. Prescott (11)
292239 2004-11-15 05:52:00 Don't just go deleting things until you have diagnosed what it is . Have a look around while in safe mode, try a few things to see if you can reproduce the problem, that's if it will let you access in safe mode .

If you can't get in to the OS in safe mode, try the HP diagnostics (maybe you should try it first, maybe safe mode is accessed via it?), I don't know how to access it, but there should be plenty of info on the net if someone with knowledge of that model of HP doesn't come by before you need the info .

292240 2004-11-17 09:57:00 Ok- to update on what has happened. Pc had two problems. The NVIDIA TNT driver was corrupted and caused graphics problems and also the whole system was bogged down and running so slow it froze up or just crashed. Had never had a clean out of rubbish or defrag in it's life. Defrag took over three hours to complete. Also did a HP diagnostic system restore to reinstal all drivers and files. Have not gone for the format option yet. Now running much better. Next step will be to get onto the net and download some program like spybot, adaware & Ccleaner to clean out some more stuff. Thanks for your replies they put me onto the right track. Peter M (852)
292241 2004-11-17 11:55:00 Another problem just come up. Seems that this pc has been on the internet before & has picked up some nasty diallers. Have tried to set up the internet connection but something is changing the password needed to connect to the isp. I set the password then as soon as I close the connection setup window it gets changed. Anyone know how I can get around this? I need to get onto the internet to download spybot s&d and adaware to get rid of the diallers. Peter M (852)

Hey I have a Pentium 2 550Mhz with only 128MB ram running WinXP Pro and it handles it fine. A little slow compared to my other PCs though.
A Pentium 3 1Ghz, Pentium 4 2Ghz, and Pentium 4 3.2Ghz.

292243 2004-11-17 18:38:00 Go to start/run and type msconfig . Then go to the startup tab . The entry for whatever is causing the dialler prob maybe there . Tell us what commands / programs are under startup .

I would say, one of these commands would belong to a dialler . If there's an entry under startup thart sounds ODD, untick it, then reboot for the time being, so u can dial up, and get either Spybot or Ad-aware .

292244 2004-11-17 19:38:00 Do you have any of the later PC World cover CD's? You can install Spybot, Adaware, AVG antivirus and Firefox off them.

Hit the AVG and Spybot updates as soon as you get on the net.

There are hundreds of HP machines floating around that came out with XP & 128Mb, Bloody ridiculous,
I'm often asked to install more memory to these machines as they are running slow. HP should be stumping up for the cost of extra ram for these machines.

Also there are nVidia drivers available as part of XP windows updates (filesize around 12Mb from memory) and if you download & install these it will probably bugger the graphics, Ive had 4 problems to fix as a result of these drivers. I don't know if they corrupt all cards but I know for sure it buggers some of them.
Always download drivers from the manufacturer.

292246 2004-11-18 05:58:00 Latest update- Have installed Spybot S&D and Adaware from off a cover CD. Spybot cleared 87 items & Adaware found another three. That's the good news, but the password in the Internet options/ connections is still getting changed. I have typed in a password 6 characters long, close the window & open it again straight away and the password is now 9 characters. Any ideas as to what is causing it and what I do next? There is no diallers showing in the start up. Peter M (852)
