292227 2004-11-15 01:17:00 My friend has the following system: HP Pavilion 8905 PC with HP MX70 monitor. AMD Duron 1.0Ghz processor, 128 Mb Sdram 20.4Gb drive with Win XP. The system locks up and displays a fault message saying there is a problem with the NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 M64 graphics card & suggests downloading the latest driver. Then after about 1 min. the monitor screen turns off and won't come back on.
1. What would cause this to happen? No changes have been made to anything on the PC.
2. She is not connected on the internet so how can she update the driver?
3. With the screen going dead after only 1 minute how can she get around that to do any changes?
Look forward to your replies.

292228 2004-11-15 01:35:00 I'm surprised XP runs at all with just 128mb. And I would say some of the videocard ram (64mb), is being used by the system, which would leave you with next to hardly any physical ram for XP.

Thats a good point. If she isnt on the net, she can't get the driver. A mate of hers who has access to the net, would have to d/l the file and burn it to cd or something.

I would also if the system stays on long enough go to control panel / add remove programs and uninstall the nvidia drivers (if there's an entry there).

The system will still work without them. You may not be able to change the resolution of the screen. Thats the only prob.

292229 2004-11-15 01:37:00 Out of interest Spacemanz how many TNT2's do you know of that use system RAM? Pete O'Neil (250)
292230 2004-11-15 01:44:00 Well even if they dont 128 mb still isnt enough for xp Spacemannz (808)
292231 2004-11-15 02:04:00 hey there, i have had similar problems to you since installing my graphics card (radeon 9600se), i upgraded from intergrated to my new graphics card and it done the same as you did, i tried the latext drivers but no sucess. so i formated and all is well now, just out of interest did it have intergrated graphics before you put in your graphics card?, i think my problem was the the drivers were clashing even though i uninstalled them, might pay to do a format, worked for me:D

292232 2004-11-15 03:07:00 Thanks for the replies. Answer is no the screen won't stay on long enough to do anything (about 1 minute)
Prescott: My friend has not made any changes to the PC since it came from the shop about 2 yrs ago. Graphics card has not been changed. It just started doing this for no apparent reason yesterday. I have access to the internet but don't have a CD burner. Will it download onto a FD if so how do I instal it onto her PC with no screen?

292233 2004-11-15 03:13:00 Have you made sure that the video card is seated correctly in the AGP slot? Does a basic inspection of the inside to make sure everything seems in order? Perhaps you should consider updating all the driver? That might be a lil bit difficult if the system wont stay on so perhaps format and fresh installtion of windows is needed? When was the last time windows was reinstalled? Pete O'Neil (250)
292234 2004-11-15 03:23:00 Nope the drivers wont fit on a floppy The exe file is 17.8 mb.

Unless u had something like a USB drive (which would be big enough for 17mb + files), and your mate has USB, then you could d/l it then copy it.

What happens if u try to go into windows thru safe mode??

Does it stay there?? You can uninstall nvidia drivers in safe mode as well.

292235 2004-11-15 04:13:00 I would try safe mode and the HP diagnostics, which I think you access just after POST (beep) at boot up. You may need the HP recsue disk, if the diagnostics fail you will need it anyway.

2 Years ago would be very late in the TNT life cycle (in fact I thought they were well gone by then), I would not expect any real advantage from upgrading to current drivers, although drivers from around the time of the original purchase might help (best stick to HP IMO), the problem is more likely corrupted drivers, XP system files or hardware related.

That machine needs at least another 256MB of RAM. If you are going to add some, HP's can be a little touchy on what RAM you feed them, you can get away with non HP RAM (expensive stuuf) but you'll need to research it.

292236 2004-11-15 04:42:00 Windows has never been re installed since original set up. Yes I was thinking of trying to access in safe mode and see if it stays on longer. Won't be going over to try until tomorrow so will post back after I try. Murray: She was guessing at the age could be 3 yrs. I don't know much about XP so if someone can tell me how to access safe mode on an HP and what to do in diagnostic mode will help heaps, thanks. Peter M (852)
