2004-11-14 11:44:00 | I am buying a new mobo Socket A, I have looked at various Gigabyte models and have no idea which chipset to go for. I like the look of the GIGABYTE GA-7N400 Pro V2.0 this has a nForce2 Ultra 400 & MCP-T chipset. Should I spend money on this? stear clear of the Gigabyte brand? Or choose a different model? Cheers Rob

2004-11-14 11:49:00 | If your after Socket A then the Nforce2 is exactly what you want and Gigabyte boards rock. The only thing i would mention is that i don't think this particuler board is a great overclocker, but 30 seconds of research will clear that up. Which of course would only matter if a purchase is dictated by your wish to oc.....

2004-11-16 14:00:00 | OK I got the sucker from Auction City (http://www.auctioncity.co.nz/) for $116. Now the b@st@rd wont go properly. I have tried a AMD 2600 Sempron and a AMD 2000 Athlon I have tried a Gigabyte R9700 Pro and a N Videa somthingorother 64Mb I have tried 512Mb AData DDR400 and 256Mb DDR266 in various slots I have tried 400W power supply and a 420W power supply(brand new) I have tried 2 HD's with XP Pro and a HD that I tried to format to install XP fresh I have tried flicking all the switches on the Mobo and adjusting the FSB in the BIOS Sata and Raid stuff is disabled I think thats everything apart from resetting the comos, loading failsafe, setting what I think it should be, and a lot more bios bashing. The problem is after the computer powers up, goes through the post, detects the drives OK, hangs for a bit then carries on until the Windows Start screen appears. Only lasts 1 or 2 seconds on the Windows Starting screen, then reboots. I set it to not reboot on errors, the resulting blue screen said HD problems scan it. It has been scanned, as above tried another drive with a working XP install, and tried to install fresh on a third known good HD. Have I missed something? Have I been ripped off? Any ideas? Cheers Rob

2004-11-16 15:54:00 | rod, This is a bit un-gigabyte. but you brought it from auction city. will it do a floppy boot, and will it boot something like knoppix or mdk move/mephis on cd. is this a silly board that only supports ata 133 or something dumb like that. D.

2004-11-16 19:52:00 | Tried a HD with a linux install on it, it wanted to set up a whole bunch on new hardware it found(this was to be expected) I couldnt figure out what drivers to load, but did a lot of mucking around selecting different ones and it didnt need to reboot, altho I didnt get the OS to load. I am prety sure the mobo supports just about everything. Cheers Rob

2004-11-16 20:00:00 | Sounds like the motherboard is fine, from what you describe i get the feeling something maybe running out of spec and causing the system to restart. 1. Check the RAM timings make sure they're correct, RAM timings are one of the biggest problems, people dont know what they are but if set incorrectly can cause major stability problems. 2. Make sure the FSB is set correctly, for both RAM and CPU. 3. What chipset does the motherboard use? Even better what motherboard is it? 4. Are the AGP/PCI frequencies locked? 5. Are you using a SATA harddrive? If so what controller?

2004-11-16 20:25:00 | The board can be found here at Auction City (www.auctioncity.co.nz) and here at Gigabyte (www.giga-byte.com(Rev%201.0).htm). I'm going to give it another go later this morning, checking the FSB and Ram timings. Not using SATA.
