292043 2004-11-14 09:37:00 Hi Folkz :-)

Burnt a dvd-r on my new dvd writer samsung dual format dvd +/- r-rw, burnt dvd of some old vhs stuff ive converted to mpeg2 so i can watch on standalone .. now i burnt at 4 x on a dvd-r and when i play it on my standalone its fine no probs but play the same dvd on my cousins dvd standaloneand it tends to skip now and then, my dvd standalone and the cousins standalone both play dvd-rs ,mines a panasonic and his a sony, both under a year old. the burnt dvd-r was an imation which id expect is top brand quality. but then again someone said.. princo dvd-rs are the best and will ensure full compatibilty on all dvd-rs.. then someone else said.. its not the media but all dvd-rs need to be burnt at 1x to ensure compatiility......

a real headache.. someone enlighten me!

292044 2004-11-14 09:44:00 Umm I use laser dvd-rs they work fine here on this PC and in a Pansonic 5 cd/dvd stereo. Burned at 4x with a pioneer 106D burner.

BUT they wont play on a Philips DVD, which is multizone. Unless you burn it as a VCD or SVCD, and disable PCB thru the settings. Mine doesnt skip tho. I guess slowing the speed might help the skipping.

292045 2004-11-14 09:52:00 I'd be looking at the bit rates for your video and audio signals, especially the maximum bit rates on the video.

I had similar problems on a disk that I had burnt from camcorder footage, trouble was that the player couldn't handle that much data. Buying a newer cheaper non brand name player and the disk was fine, however my older Sony player choked on it in places.

Therefore maybe have a check of specifications or aquire one of the DVD test disks with different data rates etc and see what works best.

What i have found we had to do was limit max bit rate for video to 6500 and under.

292046 2004-11-14 09:58:00 cheers for the replies so far

Exwesty the bitrate never came into my mind at all . . i thought it had to be either the media or the burn speed . it just so happens though that i do set the bitrate to 8000 , might try experimenting at 6500 or just under . .

any1 else with opinions on ideas on my original post please . . full compatibility . . is it the media . . is it the burn speed . . the writer . . bitrate?

292047 2004-11-14 14:10:00 I would be inclined to update the firmware of your DVD+/-RW Drive.

I had to burn at 1x or the Disc's from my writer werent readable in anything _BUT_ another DVD Writer..... Even then it would only play in about 30% of all drives.....

Updated the Firmware (A 1mb download from the manufacturers website) and it burns perfect every time now at 4x, readable on _all_ drives!!

Give it a shot :-)
