292849 2004-11-16 08:12:00 Alrighty!! What is the Differrence between Abit Radeon 9600XT and Abit ATI 9600XT??? Chicolio (6413)
292850 2004-11-16 08:14:00 again nothing. robsonde (120)
292851 2004-11-16 08:46:00 ATI design and refernce the Radeon boards, and license the likes of Abit, MSI, Gigbyte, etc, to make them. AFAIK, ATI don't make the boards themselves anymore but have a very close alliance with Saphire who do.

Metal or Pete O'neil will have a more accurate and better explanation than me so I'll stop there before I dig a hole.

292858 2004-11-16 19:40:00 Those two card will be the same things, its probably just some lazy shop not fully listed the proper name.

As Murray said ATI dont make video cards anymore, they only make the chipsets. There is an ATI brand (not avaliable in NZ) but these are made by Sapphire along with the majority of ATI cards. Sapphire make the video card for alot of the smaller manufactuers such as Powercolour and gexcube, the likes of Powercolour then fit their own HSF and sometimes their own RAM. Its a pretty safe bet that any card with a red PCB using the ATI refrence design is made by Sapphire.

Up until recently the major manufactuers were nVidia only, but as ATi gained in popularity more and more big names started making ATi cards. The likes of Abit, MSI, ASUS and Gigabyte all make their own cards.

Because the majority of ATI video cards are made by reputable manufactuers its pretty hard to buy a lemon. Stay away from Triplex, ECS, and Eagle heard far too many horror stories. Soltek have recently pop up in the NZ market selling entry level ATI cards, havent heard anything about them but would probably reckonmend going with a name brand. Heard a rumor a few months ago that the NZ Distributors for Gexcube has gone bust, which if true could cause problems with warrenties. Dont know if this is true or whats happening now, Metla might have a better idea as he'll know more about distributors than me.
