292835 2004-11-16 07:31:00 I've finished building my new computer, and it's my first computer with a soundcard in it, an Audigy 2 ZS. Anyway, I put in the driver CD to install drivers, and there are 50 different applications! Naturally I got confused, as I have never owned a soundcard before. Anyway, I'm keeping this computer fairly minimal on the extras as I'm a gamer- I don't want unneccessary bloat slowning down games and lengthening boot times. I don't have surround sound, but I will probably want to watch DVD's on it at some point. I just have headphones. I'm not interested in using Creative's software to create my own audio files, as I have a few fast and small alternatives. Anyway, I want to get the max quality out of my soundcard for the smallest amount of programs bogging down my gaming performance. Can anyone help me here? Thanks. Wilky (776)

292837 2004-11-16 09:19:00 I have an Audigy and after many software reinstalls have narrowed it down to just a few - I assume the Audigy2 programs will be similar . Anyway . . .

Windows Drivers (normal install)

Audio HQ - control panel util for setting output frequencies, EAX manipulation etc

Surround Mixer - basic mixer settings for all inputs and outputs (speaker modes) and advanced settings for EAX presets, AC3 decoder control, surround balance/fader etc .

You can do most things with Windows XP's control panel but I do recommend these programs . Also ensure you have the latest EAX4 drivers for good gaming action .

That is a great card - you MUST get a good 5 . 1/7 . 1 set! If you've got the space its a must :D

292839 2004-11-16 09:41:00 Nah man - I went from headphones and stereo speakers to a full blown 5.1 setup and have never looked back...

Everything with surround or 5.1/Dolby Digital support sounds intense - especially the Dolby Digital start sequences on DVDs! A good pair of headphones is advised for late night sessions though ;) Even bs NiCAM surround on TV sounds better... It all depends on the room and the placement of the speakers though.

The Audigy2 even has DTS decoders on board I think - that card is pretty overkill if your only gonna plug in headphones/stereo speakers!
