292751 2004-11-16 03:22:00 Hi all
A friend has just asked me wheather to get a wide screen TV or a normal. She is looking at a 29" size, and has lots of salesmen tell her that a wide screen is the way to go. She won't be getting Sky and is limited to the basic 3 channels and will be watching DVD's through it. She is willing to spend a little extra for wide screen if its worth it. I have said that I thourght the the wide screen would distort the normal picture slightly (make things fatter) though I could be wrong. So is she better off saving the $$$ for a wide screen or getting a normal screen. Your thourghts please.

Cheers

292752 2004-11-16 04:12:00 On widescreen televisions, you can set it to 4:3 ratio if you don't want normal TV fattened- so you will have black bars on the left and right. And you can't beat widescreen for movies. Go for the widescreen. Wilky (776)
292753 2004-11-16 04:12:00 DVD's do look good when viewed in widescreen. However, as all FTA (free to air) TV is 4:3 format, and all but a few movies (plus the Rugby Channel) on Sky are 4:3 format, I would take that into consideration.

A high-end widescreen TV will likely have algorithms to minimise the picture distortion created by resizing (e.g. stretching the edges slightly more than the middle etc), but many TV's will have quite noticeable distortion when viewing resized 4:3 pictures.

It comes down to the proportion of DVD's watched versus FTA TV. Until the TV companies indicate a desire to move to 16:9 (I believe TVNZ have said it won't happen), I am quite happy with my old 4:3 set.

have a look closer. there are some programs (tv1 and 3 i've noticed it on) that are in widescreen.

292755 2004-11-16 04:42:00 Indeed, there are some progs on FTA that have small black bars top and bottom on a 4 by 3 TV, as if the makers are trying to ease us in that direction, but not going the whole hog to 16 by 9. rumpty (2863)

Further investigation does indeed show that things are changing. My previous comments are quite outdated. Hopefully it will continue at a decent pace.

292757 2004-11-16 05:51:00 i think it may be a case of the orignal program is only released by the film company in 16:9 hence they have to play it (or a squessed ver of it).

i've noticed some DVD's have dual video streams, one widescreen one normal tho a lot are widescreen only.

292758 2004-11-16 06:16:00 We have just purchased a widescreen tv 32" and just love it. Like someone said above you do have the option to watch it as a normal tv with the black lines on either side.

292759 2004-11-16 06:43:00 We bought a widescreen a wee while ago and I would find it difficult to go back to a normal. Throw in a good sound system and you create a great experience when watching dvds and tv.
