292882 2004-11-16 09:07:00 Popa, unless I want a fresh install of my OS, if I pop a new drive in it's used purely for data and leave the OS where it is, as that's generally the reason you get a larger drive. Once youve freed up some space on C: you could srhink it down and give the space to F:, although this is not without risk.

You don't have a big download folder with lots of obsolete shareware and freeware installation files in it do you? Once a version has moved on to a new one and your happy with it you can get rid of the old, even the new installation files if you don't mind re-downloading if you need to reinstall. Just a thought.

292883 2004-11-16 09:20:00 C Drive, fat.32 capacity, 29.2gb, free 4.16gb, used 25.1gb
F drive, NTFS, capacity 27.9gb, free 27.3gb, used 670mb

The biggest "User" would be the Photography, probably followed by My Documents & "saved" E-mails. Basically all our correspondence. We have deleted a lot of stuff on C. But that is not the answer, really, when there is all that space on F. I guess we are going to have to change the way we do things, yes? Thanks anyway... PJ

As already mentioned, you can move your entire My Documents folder to the new drive but you need to do this the correct way. Right click on the My Documents folder icon either on the start menu or the desktop and select Properties. Click on Find Target and then browse to the F drive and click OK. From now on, anything save to My Documents will always be saved to the F drive. This should give you some more room on C.

292885 2004-11-16 09:33:00 Just move all those image folder and files right over to F: Popa, drag and drop the suckers to you hearts content. See haw far that gets you, post back if you want to do more. Next time you save an image file or download a picture, make sure you save it over in F:. As has been pointed out, you may have to change you album and graphics programmes to point to the new default, save to location. This can be done as you go or by looking for something like, Settings, Options or Preferences within the programmes.

Image files can take up a huge amount of space that can sneak up on you, unlike movies and video which tend to be obviously big chunks of files, images come in, in 500KB to 6MB files, then you edit them and they grow, especially if they're PSD, or Tiff format you can end out with a whole heap of 20MB+ working files. Anyway move the images and see how you get on.

292886 2004-11-16 09:47:00 Will print this topic and go through it slowly when a bit more "wide awake" tomorrow . Will carry out the safe moves suggested .

We knew from previous post that the photos can take up heaps of space . Maryann loves her photographic hobby so we need to put them "somewhere" ( :D ) . We don't keep everything, and M A deletes the rubbish ones . Even so, they sure take up space .

Thanks for all the help and suggestions . PJ

also look at the file sizes of your images. Jpg's can be compressed but there is a resolution loss doing this that cannot be recovered from if this compression is taken to far, also a good image manipulation program in my opinion is infranveiw (freeware)

292888 2004-11-16 18:07:00 PJ, if you find that your pics are getting too big for your "F" drive you could look at getting an external drive of large capacity, which would connect by USB and store all pics to that.
Save mucking around with installing another HDD.

open two windows explorer windows . hold ctrl and click each of them in the taskbar to select, right click and choose tile vertically so that they sit side by side on your screen and you can see both at the same time .

in the RIGHT window navigate to your f: drive and create a new folder called "documents" then create a new folder within that called "photos" . open the photos folder .

in the LEFT window navigate to your c: drive to your photos files . select them all (ctrl+a), copy them (ctrl+c) then click in the right window in the photos folder and paste (ctrl+v) . do the same with all photos in other folders (do a search for them if necessary) . after the photos have all been pasted onto your f: drive you can then delete them off your c: drive .

create new folders on the f: drive and do the same procedure for other files you wish to move, eg document files, etc .

when completed empty recycle bin after a few days then defrag your hard drive .
