292656 2004-11-16 00:48:00 Before you buy a laptop enter its make and model and the word "linux" to Google . You will learn if people have got Linux going on that model, any problems they had, and how they got around them . You might find that that model is "not recommended" .

Laptops are different . They use a lot of special proprietary hardware and the information is not always available to make it work .

Matters are improving, but it's best to avoid known problems .

The same goes for Xandros . . . Google will tell you . If one distribution works on particular hardware, any distribution should, but the "user friendly" features are where they can fall down .

292657 2004-11-16 01:14:00 The Laptop-HOWTO (part of the standard Linux documentation) is worth reading, though it's over a year old. ("linux laptops" to Google will bring that up). The Linux Laptops (http://www.linux-laptop.net/) site is probably more up to date, but the exact search for a model will pick up forum discussions of problems as well. Graham L (2)
292658 2004-11-16 02:11:00 Xandros support for WinModems rocks!

The only Distro that picked up my WinModem on my Clevo D430 laptop without any extra configuration.

Clevo & Excel seem to be happy with Linux :-)

I have had Xandros Desktop and latterly Xandros Business Edition installed on my Fujitsu laptop for some months now .

Everything works fine, except for the wireless . This is a Centrino laptop, and the wireless card did not have linux drivers the last time I looked . I think wireless is a bit problematic at this stage with any linux distro, because there are a number of wireless cards that do not have drivers .

That is a specific issue I would suggest you research if you want to access a wireless LAN - otherwise, I would support Graham L in his posts .

Xandros has user forums as well . Not sure if you can access them unless you are a registered user . However you could try at http://www . xandros . com You will see the user forums listed in the menu bar to the left . Good luck .

292661 2004-11-19 02:24:00 Hi anaroo

It is a Fujitsu Lifebook P5010. You may find it difficult to locate a supplier in NZ. I got mine brought in from the US of A. There is an agency in Oz, and I heard about a year ago that Fujitsu was going to supply them in NZ, but I don't know if they have. I saw them for sale last month in a computer store in Singapore airport. From memory they were about $S3200.

I just checked the Fujitsu website and my model seems to have been discontinued in the US of A, but there is a P5020 listed on the Oz site which is very similar to mine. Check it out here: Lifebook (www.lifebook.com.au)

I bought it because I do a lot of travelling and I was trying to shed cabin baggage bulk and weight cos of back problems.

It is a cool little beast with a 10.6 inch screen, and it weighs 1.75 kg with the standard high capacity battery and DVD/CD-RW combo drive. You can also get another battery to replace the latter, thus giving you a much longer battery life. Or you can insert a weight saver instead of the DVD drive and get the thing down to 1.55kg.

I just remembered that I first installed Linux (Fedora) on a bog standard Toshiba Satellite, and it worked fine. However it confused the family members who use that laptop, so I removed it before I got Xandros. I don't see why it shouldn't work on the Toshiba as well.

I dual boot on the Fujitsu with XP so if I want to use the wireless function, I just boot into XP. Sad I haven't been able to get away entirely from Bill Gates' profiteering, but that will come. :-)

292662 2004-11-19 02:26:00 Sorry anaroo, you had another question I didn't answer .

The Fujitsu came with XP Pro, and I later installed Xandros Desktop v2 on it myself . It was very easy to do, even for a klutz like me .
