293449 2004-11-18 04:29:00 i just got a new hd and i'm thinking of installing window xp onto the new hd
the computer now currently have a hd with win2k

i want to put xp on the new hd which is going to be master
and the old win2k will be on the old hd which is going to be slave

the question is that is it possible for me to dual boot these two systems?
one on master one on slave?

i'm thinking that i probably have to install the new xp system first then add back the old system into boot.ini

is this the right way to do it?
or is there some simpler method...

293450 2004-11-18 04:35:00 just install it as you said and windows will detect it and ask for you which one you wanna go into Prescott (11)
293451 2004-11-18 04:36:00 It will work fine, but install the newest OS last, not first. That means you can carry on as you are now and bung XP on with 2k already installed, XP will then control the boot process and offer you a menu to choose either OS at boot up, If you make no choice after so many seconds (10) the default OS (XP) will start.

Just don't install XP first please.

293452 2004-11-19 08:36:00 what about the problem with drive letters?
would it be different in the two systems?

win2k already installed on old hd which is going to be moved to slave
so the drive letter would come after the new hd in master right?

or would the drive letter be arranged differntly in the old 2k and new xp
which might cause less problems...

293453 2004-11-19 08:43:00 XP / Windows has a lot of letters to choose from (A-Z). If theyre on different hdd's I would say they'll be different letters.

Windows SHOULD allocate the XP hdd a new letter (which hasnt been taken yet).

Just as long as boot.ini has both hdds/OS's in it, so you can select 2k or XP, it'll be fine.

293454 2004-11-19 09:09:00 The Windows 2000 installation will produce errors after the partition is recognised as D following relegation to slave .

This is because of registry entries relating to installed software on what was the C drive and is now the D drive .

There are methods for dual operating systems, but this is one fraught with problems .

293456 2004-11-20 02:02:00 Why not install the new drive as slave?

Then just install XP on it. These days, I don't think it matters which is master and which is slave.

That way, W2k will be happy because that's still where it was installed, and XP will be happy because it's just been installed.

293457 2004-11-20 07:18:00 after xp is all settled and all working nicely... win2k is going to be removed completely...
just want to keep system on C

293458 2004-11-20 07:28:00 You could have just removed the hdd with 2k on it and installed the new hdd and installed xp on it in that case. Spacemannz (808)
