293400 2004-11-17 23:06:00 I have a self installation broadband kit from xtra. I intend hooking up Monday arfo.
In the kit is a little plastic bag with 4 little brown plastic plug things.
I ordered 4 filters so I presume they go there somewhere. I cant get them to fit in the asdl port or the phone connection port on a filter.

Its quite amazing, in the email xtra sent to confirm connection possible a link to installation was a dead link. I rung them up and they said yes quite right the link is dead and I was first person to notify them.
2 days later link is still dead.
I rung them up about the plugs once again they have never had that question either.
Either I am real stupid and dumb as dirt (high possibility) or people just accept lack of information and go with what they have.
I am self confessed paranoid about not starting any project until I know every thing I can. The word pendantic springs to mind about me as well.
Hope some cleverer person than me can help

thanks

293401 2004-11-18 00:37:00 Tedheath, the filters go into your phone socket in the wall. Then you connect any normal phone devices into the socket which says "phone" and connect the ADSL modem into the socket which says "ADSL".

I don't have one of the telecom kits, but I assume those "4 little brown plastic plug things" are probably the filters. Filters usually have a normal phone plug, which goes into a plastic box thingy with 2 sockets - one small and one big.

293402 2004-11-18 00:40:00 Those little plugs push into each corner of bottom of modem or on one side if you want it to sit on its side on your desk
Dont worry, I had to think too,and make sure Tech rings you when your number is ready at exchange, they did not notify me and am credited now for 2 days they charged me at $2.50 per hour for dailup that I was unaware of.

293403 2004-11-18 00:40:00 Chuck in the insatallion cd and run it,it has descriptions and diagrams and what everything does and what it looks like.

I would suggest you use of the ethernet connection rather then usb,and if you do decide to use USB then make sure you have your W98 cd real close,it will ask for it and if you don't have it then next time u start your comp it won't boot due to the half installed virual device drivers......

293404 2004-11-18 00:49:00 hi tedheath. Running XP PRO, SP2 etc. Just been through the routine. It did not work on the ethernet connection. All modem lights functioned. I installed the USB software and it still did not work, though lights again functioned. Uninstalled the USB software. Then noticed a "DSL 302G Admin (ETH)" icon on my desktop. Double clicked on that and all is well. Runs on the ethernet connection. Magic. Good luck. Scouse (83)
293405 2004-11-18 00:50:00 Forgot to mention... the magic bit is that my wife can use the phone while I'm browsing. Scouse (83)
293406 2004-11-18 01:00:00 Hey ted,

Those brown plastic things if I recall correctly are the feet to the modem?

The filter (microfilter) is the actual two way phone adapter which has ADSL output and Phone output on it, you connect that to the socket and then the devices into those plugs, it seems you don't have the extra filters you ordered.

The self-install kit is not as easy as Xtra make it out to be, I've been called in numerous times to setup peoples ADSL, Telecom charge $150 for someone to do it for you, I only charge for the time it takes to do it and that's usually less than an hour.

The package is not too bad, free line connection, $100 to drop off the year contract, switch to another ISP for free and only pay $10 more for unlimited. Is an option? Considering it would have cost you $100 to get the connection if it wasn't on offer, but at least you got the modem for free out of it.

293407 2004-11-18 01:21:00 Thank you very much for replies yes the brown things are little feet for the modem. See I told you I was dumb.
I will use ethernet connection as it is the preferred method.
I have managed to struggle through changing sound card, and DVD writer, power supply.

Thanks

I wouldnt worry too much ted, I would consider myself hardware savvy and found installing my DSL connection one of the biggest pains in the a$$. I'm surprised we dont see alot more complaints on this forum from people having difficulties with ADSL.
