293229 2004-11-17 07:44:00 I have installed my digital camera on ME using a USB cable and it shows up as a "mass storage device".

Sometimes when I connect the camera, the computer recognizes the camera as a mass storage device and all is OK. But often, it simply shows as an unknown USB device. Any attempt to access the camera using Explorer causes the computer to hang.

I have tried installing the drivers into this "unknown device" but ME is smarter than me and won't let me do it; or maybe I am trying to install the wrong drivers. I did though manage once to get one of the two required drivers installed but that was not much help. And maybe this is futile anway as ME may lose the device when it is shut down.

Anyone got a solution?

293230 2004-11-17 07:53:00 Unplug the device, plug it back in so Windows can redetect it and hopefully identify it properly.

Switching the camera on and off may have the desired effect as well.

293231 2004-11-17 07:54:00 Brand of camera?

Plug in the camera
Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Device Manager (tab)
Look for the camera (it'll be in there somewhere) - are there any funky images on the camera to suggest there is a conflict/lack of drivers/etc?

If you have the INF file of the drivers available (this is usually on the drivers CD - and is suffixed with INF), then in Device Manager, click on the camera and click properties, then on either the first or second tab there will be an option to install alternate drivers (or something along those lines) - click on this, follow the instructions, tell Windows you know where your drivers are to be found and point it in the right direction - from there you just have to follow your nose.

Another thing to consider - was the manual followed for setup?
Windows has the occasional habit of assigning the wrong driver to some P'n'P devices if it doesn't know what they are or if it thinks it knows what they are (or in the rare case the Windows drivers are just dodgy and cause errors) - all have been known to occur. This is why some manufacterers will say install the drivers before plugging in the device - as this will update the Windows Driver Database and give you something solid to work with.

293232 2004-11-17 08:47:00 ME is well known to perform like a pig with cameras, especially cannons
I haven't found a fix yet & I've tried everything

293233 2004-11-17 19:05:00 Further to my initial post: I have tried all combinations of turning on the computer/ starting camera etc. It makes no difference (except as noted below). I have installed the camera on a laptop (running ME) with no problems; ever(!). The problem is with my desk-top. I am currently reinstalling ME on the desk-top and hoping to eliminate the camera problem but it looks like this is not to be.

The camera is a Nikon 3100E and as far as I can tell, it uses microsoft default mass storage device drivers and there are no relevant ones on the installation disc.

I have been trying the following: Turn camera on and then turn computer on. So far, this has worked every time. Now maybe this is not that unexpected as I have had problems in connecting a scanner and a printer when ME is running. These are normally permanently connected but if say, I move the scanner to the laptop, then when I move it back, the desktop may not recognise it. Ditto with the printer. So in the past, I have always turned off the computer before connecting. This eliminates the problem.

So in summary, maybe it is simply that if one connects any USB device to a computer running ME, then ME may not recognise the device. Maybe the problem is in one of the Windows drivers.

Anyway, I think I now have a work-around instead of the solution I was originally looking for.

293234 2004-11-17 19:27:00 Did the camera come with a program on CD? Maybe the program installs the drivers?? Which maybe why it doesnt like u trying to install the drivers from the device manager?

If there is/was a program on the CD, is the entry in Add/remove programs?? Uninstall it, if there's an entry. And if it created a folder in program files, on the hdd, delete that, before u reinstall the program again. Does this camera have a memory card slot in it??

The scanner and the printer? Are they BOTH USB or both Parallel???

And what else is in the desktop?? besides the hdd/video.. Anything else like cd/dvd/burners???

And have you got a USB hub???

293235 2004-11-17 19:30:00 Oops one more thing. The desktop. Check the BIOS and see if theres an option for Mass storage devices. Some bios'es like this PC I use have the option. The laptop might have this option, and its enabled which might explain why it works on that and not the desktop. Spacemannz (808)
293236 2004-11-17 21:44:00 The camera came with a programme on a CD. It makes no difference whether I use this programme to install the camera or just let Windows install it. Only advantage with the programme is that it automates data download.

Unistalling and or reinstalling the programme doesn't help.

BIOS has no entry for mass storage device.

Scanner and printer both USB (I have a seoncd printer which is on the parrallel port).

Camera has a memory card. A fall-back fall-back option is to use a card reader (assuming this does not give the same error).

Am starting with a clean install so have very little else installed at this stage. Starting installatin with all of the difficult hardware! (Currently have an operational Windows setup on a second hard disc).

I have a 4 port USB 2.0 PCI card installed. Have tried the camera both on this card and on the on-board USB 1.1 port. No different. I have wondered if the card could be a problem. The card came with a set of microsoft drivers and was, I think, the source of an intermittent General Protection Error. I have since replaced the drivers with a set I got of the Dick Smith website (supplier of the card) and this, so far, has fixed the GPA problem.

293237 2004-11-17 22:11:00 Try unplugging the scanner before you plug in the camera. I had a problem with XP detecting my camera and it turned out to be a usb driver file being used by both the camera and scanner but windows would not let it load twice. Davesdad (923)
293238 2004-11-17 22:30:00 Scanner is not currently installed.

The only hardware I have installed (on this clean-install attempt of ME) is the camera, USB 2.0 PCI card, video card, network card and CD Writer (using Windows default drivers). (Plus of course hard disc and floppy disc and screen driver)
