293194 2004-11-17 06:50:00 I know its illegal to download games, movies and music but is it illegal to download tv episodes? Its not much different to using a VCR to record the show and watching at a later date. You never hear people on the TV whinging about people illegally downloading TV series, I even remember ole Robo mentioned he downloaded Star Trek: Enterprise long before it screened here in lil NZ. 293196 2004-11-17 07:04:00 Yes, Read below which was from another source

Hollywood film studios filed suit against online video file swappers in federal courts across the United States on Tuesday, making good on a promise to punish computer users they claim are violating copyright laws.

The move against people who copy and trade illegal copies of movies and TV shows is part of broad effort by the industry's chief lobbying group to stem copyright piracy it says costs studios billions of dollars annually.

A Motion Picture Association of America spokesman said suits were filed across a broad spectrum of the United States, but declined to say how many.

Earlier this month, when the MPAA announced it would begin filing individual "John Doe" lawsuits, the number of expected suits was widely reported to be in the hundreds.

293197 2004-11-17 07:35:00 I have a suspicion that in Canada, once it's aired on telly you can record it and keep it for as long as you like...

In New Zealand you are allowed to timeshift shows in order to watch them at a more convenient time, but you're not supposed to keep this copy longer than is reasonable to have watched it.

Use your own discretion, but I'd personally say that to download and watch an episode that had recently aired here would be perfectly within your rights.

293198 2004-11-17 08:07:00 As TV series are copyrighted material, and TV stations have to pay royalties to broadcast it, it is covered by copyright law so theoretically it will be illegal to download them. However, this is just as illegal as taping a TV show, but people have done it for years, and as you said, nobody seems to whinge about it.

Technically it's illegal, so I wouldn't do it.

293199 2004-11-17 08:50:00 Basic rule of thumb, if you don't have permission, then it's illegal. cadifan (286)
293200 2004-11-17 08:58:00 but what are you supposed to do when tv3 or tvnz just stop bradcasting the series halfway through just becouse it was there mistake to put it on at the wrong time slot and suppsedly get bad ratings

e.g the practise, 2 pints of larger , and numerous other tv series

293201 2004-11-17 09:26:00 Well like I said, it's legal to timeshift in New Zealand.

Whether you extend that to "I didn't record it so I could watch it later, but I did want to watch it, but I was busy, so I'm going to download it, watch it, and delete it, all in a [doubtfully] legal manner" is your opinion.

I'd go ahead and download, but only if it's aired recently (within the last fortnight) on free-to-air television, and I'd delete it afterwards. Some might claim it's illegal to do this, but the end result is basically the same - you see it and then get rid of it.

Besides, how many people are likely to erase their VHS tapes after watching a recorded program? It's far more likely they'll leave it as is until they tape over it.

For gods sake get a grip Agent. "Not supposed to keep this copy longer than is reasonable to have watched it."

Where did you read that gem.

VHS tapes usually degrade after a couple of years anyway, so woohooo

293203 2004-11-17 10:06:00 It's probably just as illegal as taping songs off the radio :p

But who really cares? As long as blank cds, videos, tapes are sold people are going to record stuff without royalty payments.

When average Joe starts getting prosecuted then maybe people will change their ways.

ps. the who really cares refers to world in general, no one specific
