293157 2004-11-17 04:46:00 This IRC server is designed as a replacement for ChatF1 (the slow, unpopular chat solution). It was created on the 13th of this month (November) and now often has 6 or so PressF1 members on at once.

Everyone who has used the server has suggested this post be made, and stickied by Chill (if you don't mind that is).

The details of the IRC server are:

Server: irc.jgi.co.nz
IP Address: 222.152.55.106
Channel name: PressF1

The server is moderated by myself (George) or certain other people who happen to be online when I am not and I give OP permissions to.

Repetitive posting of the song one is listening to using a Winamp plugin is not permitted;).

Those who have read Bletch's thread about PressF1 users' IM address' may already know about this server, but thread is so that it does not disappear into the millions of forgotten posts off the first page, and so that those who do not know of this server can find and make use of it.

The server should not be down for more than 30 minutes per week or so, so if it is please send me an e-mail.

The chat server can be used for many things, including:

- General discussion
- Instant answers to a problem
- A place to dump stuff that doesn't quite warrant an OT thread

And anything else you feel like, so long as it is not breaching the rules. Officially I have not set any rules, but I encourage users to use the PressF1 rules as a guideline. Anything that would warrant trouble on the forum is not welcome on the chat.

The chat server features the ability for any user to create a new channel or join an existing one simply by typing in /join [channelname]. Remeber that the standard channel is called 'PressF1'.

One can also have a private conversation with anybody on the server.

To use IRC, you need an IRC client. Here I will provide links to some IRC clients:

Windows Clients

Trillian (www.trillian.cc) - Good looking, and can also use the ICQ, MSN, Yahoo and AIM. Can minimize to system tray
IceChat (www.download.com) - A lot of features, IRC only, can also minimize to system tray
mIRC (http://www.mirc.com) - One of the best IRC clients, however it is not free

Linux Clients

xChat (http://www.xchat.org) - A decent, free linux client - you do have to register however

Once you have downloaded and installed your client, simply log on with the details at the top of this post.

Note: You may not use any names which imply you are an Op, such as 'channelOp', 'God', 'Moderator'. These names are only allowed to be used by me. To ensure somebody really is me, the Host name (looks like an e-mail address) will end in @JG-WS10. That is, if I am on my home PC. I can also manually Op myself if I am not a channel Op.

Have fun on the server :).

Chill please sticky.

Cheers George

293158 2004-11-17 04:49:00 Just an addition, Chilling_Silence is also getting an IRC server set up. When it is up and running he can add it in here. Then people will have choice :). george12 (7)
293159 2004-11-17 05:09:00 Dont think i'll be using any form of PressF1 IRC until chill gets his setup, i dont think a new user should have any form of administration powers. I would feel much happier know chil is maintaining and watching over any PressF1 IRC channel. george you may also want to remove any reference to PF1 in your channel, i vaguely remember back when ImageF1 and ChatF1 were first setup , it was mentioned by the powers at be that they may face legal action if they didnt remove any refrences to PF1. 293160 2004-11-17 05:12:00 Wow really? Ok removing the references... Until Bruce or somebody says otherwise

Cheers

293161 2004-11-17 05:12:00 I suggest you take the lead of ChatF1 and let people know it's an unofficial IRC server, intended for use by PressF1 members.

You could perhaps also implement a web-based IRC client for those who want to quickly try it out.

293162 2004-11-17 05:16:00 Same as Tony, really, too.

I know I tried out your IRC server, but as of yet I still wouldn't use it because of the way my router is behaving.

I'm not sure what Chill's status is on the IRC server, but for security and privacy reasons I'd much rather use his if he's implementing IIP (Invisible IRC Project).

293163 2004-11-17 05:19:00 OK, new channel name is now IRCF1 in accordance with what Pete said.

Cheers

It is important not to confuse people about who is running such services, so please do not label it "PressF1".

293165 2004-11-17 05:23:00 If Chill or any other powers of the forum are unhappy about the server it will go without a fuss. Quite fun though I think. george12 (7)
293166 2004-11-17 05:25:00 Got it Bruce, now it's IRCF1 - The Unofficial F1 Chat Server. No references to PressF1 remain. george12 (7)
