293438 2004-12-09 05:15:00 to elaborate on the issue a little more...

It would need to have a modchip fitted, and a larger HD if you planned on storing more then one or 2 games.

Modding it isn't against the law,But backing up games would be breaking copyright laws.....Can't imagine that keeping anyone up at night though.

I second that, gokarts where the most fun you can have with your pants on. I remember letting my Sega Mega Drive lie dorment for weeks at a time as I implemented 'state of the art' brakes on my kart. Then i figured out that you would need to add a hand brake to each side of the kart so that you don't go flipping over. I'm sure its why physics is one of my better subjects!

There is a lot more creativity induced in making/playing on gokarts (especially implenting special features), than there are on video games.

Other than that, i'd probably go with the PC. More expensive but far more use than a video console.

293440 2004-12-09 09:32:00 Yeah but have you seen the price of timber? It seems that it doesn't grow on trees.
The wheels were another expense.

In days when my brothers and I used to make them we raided the inorganic collections in the neighbourhood for lawnmower and pram wheels, trouble is these days prams and strollers all have plastic wheels and ditto for the lawnmower wheels as well, CRAP

One of our best trollys was what we called the Red Barrel ( a take on the Red Baron? ) A 44 Gallon drum with a side sliced out, a car steering wheel mounted inside with pully system steering and a wide wheel base, and brakes that sort of worked, yeah we lived on a hill and used to career down it usually doing a slide and spin at the bottom to slow and stop.

Try that these days and OSH and the police would be all over us lol

293441 2004-12-09 10:49:00 I'm just going to share my two cents worth. I can only comment on my pc and ps2 though, never had much to do with an xbox..

I really like the wide range of games you can get for the pc, but the one thing that really annoys me is the buy-new-game/upgrade-comp cycle. After several years of trying to keep up (and costing a small fortune), I decided to get myself a cheap secondhand ps2. I don't regret that at all. I know that any new game for it that comes out will actually run on it, and usually quite well at that. Theres a good range of titles, which so far is still being added to. I can chuck my dvd's at it, play audio cd's, no prob. It never crashes and it's been known to be on for days on end. (ok, I forget to turn it off sometimes :P) Heck, if I wanted to, I could even mod it and turn it into a linux box.

At a guess, I would say it would be supported for at least a while yet. Also, Sony have released the new ps2 version, the funny-looking slimline one. Its a lot cheaper than the old ps2's and xboxes from what I've seen of prices.

I like my pc but I do think consoles have their places. (Like when my sib turns up and I need to find a way to drag her off the comp, I just start playing her favourite game on the ps2. Gets her every time).

The chances are, your kids will scream 'xbox!' though.

All an xbox brings is game selection, ease of use,and multiplayer . . . . in return you get graphics on par with a mid range pc from 2 years ago, displayed at low res .

Yes - but you can't "realistically" play the latest games on a 2 year old PC (HALO for example), and for $300 . 00 for an XBox is excellent value .

My 2 cents worth .

Off topic - I had a smoke and coffee before work this morning (at a cafe), no problems . So much for the smoking legislation . . .

293443 2004-12-09 20:32:00 meh - not many people are going to enforce that law , they reakon it will decrease sales as people will buy there own alcohol and then smoke in their own house noone (22)
293444 2004-12-09 20:32:00 Of course you can,Lower the res to 640x480 and your away laughing,Besides which Halo was designed to run on a gforce2,They even released a demo about 5 years ago that looked near as good as the finel release and ran fine on gf2 cards.

It was MS's influence that created the crapola that was released.

Ports are a bad idea no matter which way you slice it.
